um not to rain on the hate parade, but does anyone realize how complicated this software is? It has to:
1. Pick up the right time and meter from an a capella vocal track on a .wav file.
2. from that same vocal track, pick out the key and chord progressions.
Using the sting and biggie tracks is like setting up the ultimate strawman. We all know what those songs are supposed to sound like, so of course some genericized versions of them, without the work of brilliant musicians with decades of experience is going to sound like shit. While I won't be burning and cd's with the stuff, it's still pretty impressive.
The Roxanne one is good compared to the Sgt. Peppers one. And I'm going to give it credit for Dead Wrong. I prefer that version to the original. Actually, I've never heard the original...
Speaking of sucky Microsoft products, The Zune's sales declined 54% in the same quarter that iPods set records.
Would they have gotten any street cred if they had just slapped that clever 'Beta' label on this that google uses so efficiently? Then people might say "Man, this is neat software. It's extraordinarily complicated. They missed a little on some of the songs, but it's only a Beta version so I'm sure the 2.0 version is going to kick ass!"
I fully realize how complicated it is.
I also realize that it's pretty much just automating muzak, which can only make the world worse.
