PiKA Buggy Website

A Fringe Alum (Sam Swift) recently made a website with pictures of many past and current PiKA buggies. For those who do not know, this year Fringe will feature a team of Beta pushers.

From Naveen.

Update Link Fixed.

Was Zeus terribly more innovative than its venerable predecessor Phantom? Zeus and Brazen always seemed like longstanding rivals with much in common ... small, refined, durable, winners ... I like to think Zeus set its record in 2000 because there was a scary looking tiger-striped buggy named Junior chasing it up hill 1.

Alright, fair enough, but I don't think Zeus can claim all the credit. Jackal or Brim or Wyv could have won those races with those pushteams too. What Zeus has that none of the others can match is durability and dependability. It's not going to spin, and it's not often going to blow a tire. That's why it's stayed on top and earned the title 'prolific' (which I thought was quite the honor).

Or at least, that's how it looks from where I stand.

See, everyone knows it's the pushers.

Seeing these "unauthorized" pictures reminds me of when I made an offer to Hendrix to be "the guy who annoys the guy from Fringe who takes notes on us during rolls." It was basically going to involve me pretending to take notes on the guy who was taking notes. Except that I would've read my notes out loud, and they'd basically just be one-liners making fun of the guy. Hendrix declined, and I got to sleep in.

I never realized I was supposed to write it Zeus©.

And I had an over/under of Bean posting on this thread within 3 minutes. I'm really starting to worry. If nothing else, he can give us the trophy precedent from '56 when 3 Kap Sig brothers pushed for The Dorms and got 3rd place.

speaking of this, did anyone one else open the cmu carnival announcement and see a mr. wood giving a presentation on the history of buggy? (and all of your friends, blurry on the cover)

I love Hendrix. Looks like I picked the wrong afternoon to work. Wow! Nice site, good job Sam. But some things creep me out, like this photograph was, without a doubt, taken by my father:

http://pikabuggy.com/v/Phantom/Endy_to_Burch_2.jp...

I think it got posted on bhendrix in the 'Old School' album, so apparently alot of the fodder on that site was gathered from all over the place, perhaps the Beta Sigma 70's site or some of Wood's presentations as well (like in the case of some of those 'Classic' photos). Andy, we'll have to tell Brickner he made the 'Classic' section.

Speaking of Wood's presentations, yes I believe at 1:30 pm on Friday of Carnival Tom will be giving one on "The History of Buggy." This will actually be his third presentation. If you've never seen either of the first two, they're LONG but interesting. I think the 2nd is on the CMU sweepstakes page right now, plus there are copies available here and there that someone could send.

My favorite presentation was when we (I don't even remember who exactly, but basically the officers at the time and me as the Rush chair, I think) went to Mace's house and he went through the history of PiKA, and graded each generation on the basis of IM football and Buggy before practicing his bartending skills on us and sending us home.

Is true. We talked about it all the time and exchanged rumors and legends. 'Dude, I heard that their buggy chair got a massive load of wood screws delivered at the house... WTF? Wood screws?' 'Yeah, I heard Bordick was covered in wood dust for like three months...'.

i heard klaus was covered in wood dust all the time too. also, stoler's looking a little rough here. if you squint hard, i think you can see his brain leaking out his ear.

I don't know who this Shane McGuire fellow is, but I like the cut of his jib.

I think prolific may be an understatement. Zeus has won more races than some organizations, such as Fringe, have won in their entire organization's history. WOW! Additionally, this buggy set a still standing Pika house record of 2:06.71. With a time only toped by the spirit of the late 80's, I'd say this buggy is much more than "durable and reliable".

Ryan, the year of the picture was '06. Also I am pretty sure you are just to the left of the pusher and are taking a picture.

I agree the bags on the buggy are lame. Seriously how on earth is that really going to have any impact other than making you look stupid. I like to think it is some new rule requirement by sweepstakes, because that would make sense.

--Marissa April 1, 2008 03:36:52 PM
     Great Comment?

Yeah, I went to rolls the weekend of JT's wedding. This is a new sweepstakes rule all new drivers need to have bags on...

--oof April 1, 2008 03:52:15 PM
     Great Comment?

I took into consideration that that might be a new rule. The lame part is the fact that some body took the time to get plastic bags when a perfectly good parking meter cover is available for much less work

--ryan April 1, 2008 04:05:31 PM
     Great Comment?

jay frank blaise was there in 06? Why dont I remember that? Oh right, because of the damage caused by carnival 06 and 07

--ryan April 1, 2008 04:30:55 PM
     Great Comment?

Yes, the bags are mandatory now and it's a stupid rule. I've encouraged our guys time after time to mock the rule by taping the bag completely flat against the shell. I thought the rule was in effect before Ryan and Oof left, no?

Can someone scan and post this mailer? Or is it available online? (Insert "I don't know why you wouldn't have received it Rick, after all it was sent to ALL alumni" joke here, Mayes.) Pretty sure no jay frank blaise in '06, or any year after '01.

--bean April 1, 2008 05:08:23 PM
     Great Comment?

again i'll point to the damage of the last 7 years, but i am pretty sure the rule was not in place when we were in school

but michelle once asked us to put one on her. I'm sure the answer to that was no

--ryan April 1, 2008 05:14:08 PM
     Great Comment?

Hell no, there was no rule like that in the good old days. I definitely would have taped a bag flat or perhaps taped bags to the follow car, pushers, blowing leaves, etc. and other subversive acts.

     Great Comment?

jay frank blaise was definitely there is '06. He was part of "Team We Take Your Money and You Suck Dick" in pong featuring him, me, Ravi, and Joiner.

--decker April 1, 2008 06:06:02 PM
     Great Comment?

Michelle definitely asked for a bag (the answer was definitely no). After her first roll for us ever and possibly THE slowest we've ever sent a buggy, she declared it 4 times as fast as she went on Raceday with Sig Tau the year before.

Holy crap! You know, after I posted, I thought maybe he was there for one of those marathon Ravi/Bricker/etc gambling pong sessions, but I just couldn't remember. I plead the same excuse Ryan's been using. Never tell Jay I thought he wasn't there. Especially since he may be rooming with me this year and he'll have limitless opportunity to Steam me Cleveland-style.

Shortly after this picture, Ravi promptly lost all of his gains to me in an ill advised stretch of personals and darts matches. It was the Casino philosophy of "whatever happens don't let them leave, get them back to the table".

Anyone (other than bordick) remember this?

Color was briefly added to some buggies my freshman year at a failed attempt at fraternizing with a driver.

As much fun as I am having looking at all these old pictures, I am surprised (expecially considering the FOAD concentration in the audience) that there hasn't been discussion of a network attack on this site to prevent it from disseminating our secrets.

     Great Comment?

Ouch, Jon. Jeff, you'll have to be careful to not incur scoreboard wrath of certain younguns. There are two guys from '06 who are each a 4. For real.

And maybe about 5 years ago I'd have been upset at that site. But given the fact that we're as responsible as anyone else for making publicly available a bunch of photos (because a large portion of those photos are just snagged from sites hosted by pikes), we don't really have too much of a legit gripe at this point. And seeing the photos they've taken themselves or collected from other sources gives insight as to who is watching when, from where, and to what extent, so that's sort of neat. Plus, on that site, they've said the pikes "are being good sports about it" so I don't wanna rock that boat at this point.

And probably most importantly...I pretty much defer to Wood on what is to be talked about and what is not, and based on some of the stuff he's disclosed in his first two "History of" presentations, the stuff on that site is pretty tame in comparison. Anyone intrigued by this statement should definitely be at his third, this Carnival Friday at 1:30. Including the non-pikes I know are lurking out there ;)

--bean April 2, 2008 08:25:50 PM
     Great Comment?

Personally, I'm all for some of our "secrets" getting out there. 2000, even with the record, always felt like an empty win for me because there was no way we were going to lose that race. 4 seconds may have been embarassing, but it was also pretty hollow. When winning becomes a relief, then it kinda just sucks. Although, I love the idea that we have so many junior alumni since not many of them have actually seen a loss. I think everyone pre 04 ought to be making these new kids get us beers for pong.

Looking at the most popular threads, I think 'Boys in Blue' might be the greatest of all time. It was about beating speeding tickets, immediately hijacked into an NBA finals discussion which turned into 'How to save non-football sports - except hockey, which is dead.' And it ends with Battle Beasts. It's a sprawling trainwreck that's hard to look away from.

Back before Oof knew the copious and flattering tears of defeat, he decided that we were going to break the course record. His goal time was, 2:05.5. He attempted to instill a sense of purpose into the house populace by stencil painting in black, above the breakfast bar said 2:05.5.

That yearalso saw the chairman quit which no one talks about. This result of yet another elevation/election recommendation fouled up by bth. I was the first. Klaus as chair, numero dos. Lesson, don't vote for a hendrix endorsement.

So it turns out the house isn’t a big fan of the pikabuggy website and that is why all those disclaimers came up on the site about it being unofficial. Since half of those photographs are from Facebook or Tom Wood’s presentation there probably isn’t much room to complain though.

I think it's awesome and hilarious that you guys are the biggest fans of the site. it was supposed to be retaliation for them sending the goon squad after me during a nice peaceful morning of rolls. I guess it did make the current kids mad though, so that's all good.

the site currently has 26,000 pageviews over 1,500 visits by 750 unique visitors, so I guess there was demand for pictures of pika buggies. just think how popular they would be if somebody spent more than 10 minutes on the paint job.

good to see i'm not the only one that can't resist the buggy mood come late-march. see you guys around at the races.

Hey Sam... thanks for posting over here.

You have a great thing going over at your site... the sheer amount of pics that you have collected is pretty impressive. A couple of questions:
1. Did you find most of them online?
2. Are you open to people adding more?
3. Why no Fringe buggies (or other organizations, for that matter)? It would be very cool to have others on there to compare / reminisce!

... and we both know that paint jobs are for design competition.

I didn't do much looking around online for pictures. most of them were taken by people I know. now that other people are adding them, I can't really keep track of where they're coming from. but when you think of how many cameras are out at rolls and raceday every year, it's not hard to put together a few hundred pictures. hence my point of it being stupid to harass people.

yeah, definitely. I had to turn off the anonymous uploads after we got some generous contributions of nasty porn from folks at the house, but go ahead and make an account. I'll have to add new albums for desperado and maverick pretty soon.

having other pictures on there didn't really occur to me since I was just doing it to piss them off, but you're right it would be cool. maybe i'll get to work on everyoneelse'sbuggies.com

Josh, pics of Fringe buggies:

http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/fringe/buggy/index...

http://www.fringe.org/

I think by "goon squad" he may be referring to the guy making an obvious attempt to block someone photographing:

http://pikabuggy.com/v/Raceday08/00033.jpg.html

The last reference to a goon squad at rolls that I remember was when SDC was taking a bunch of pictures one day, and Ball-Sac happened to be out at rolls, still wrapped in the blanket he slept under. Paul "encouraged" him to interfere with the picture-taking, so Sac went over to the camera guy, and everywhere he pointed it to take a picture, Sac got in the way, opened up the blanket, and basically acted as obnoxiously as possible. Highly comical for us, definitely an enormous pain in the ass for SDC. Matt Solitro came over to me and said, "Can't you do something about your goon squad?" And I said, "You know, I could say something, but I really don't think it's going to make a difference."

Bean - I usually start with a $20 (or a hunge if I have one), but that's typically scoffed at. But usually if you start with a $20, someone will throw SOME money on the table. And then you just have to get them drunk enough OR make sure they have no smaller bills available - and BLAM! the big bucks are on the table. It's a strategy see...

And BTW - Burch may not remember, but after he ripped apart the money, I told him that in my religion money was a form of God and that he disrespected God and I was insulted and he apologized to me (although it was probably insincere cause he hates non-white people).

Hopefully there will be some form of TWTYMAYSD representing at carnival this year...

Only part Jewish - my ancestors used to live on an Island off the coast of Israel that was home to primarily Irish Jewish people. My entire last name back then was O'Pimplaskarinman. However, My Great-Great Grand Uncle, Reverend Lezgo O'Pimplaskarinman was tired of people removing the "laskar" from the name and calling him "Reverend Lezgo O'Pimpinman". So he dropped the inman from the last name and we were just the O'Pimplaskars from then on. I'm sure people on here know the story of why the "O'" apostrophe was dropped later on - so I won't bore you with those details.

Nice hack, Bth.

I believe I was technically awake, as were a bunch of us, until we all sat down to watch Simpsons on Sunday evening. And watching us drop at that point must have been like watching the Hale-Bopp comet followers. But yes, from mid-afternoon on I'm not sure that you would call the state I was in "awake." Upright - and barely at that - but I don't know about awake.

And yeah, for the most part Dave, Sunday Carnivals aren't great. A bunch of alumni have left, no radio broadcast for races, no APhiO to do the leader board, you have to go to classes the next day, no official party Sunday night, and the party for those able to party on Saturday probably had to be pretty toned down. Winning made it all okay though, like I imagine it made it okay in '90. I can't imagine what it must have been like in '81 though - they got rained out the entire Carnival weekend, had to race the following weekend, and spun.

Jeff, you're right in that there's no reason to expect the volume of buggy-related comments per day to drop (even once we switch threads), but we'll only have that thread alive for a few days - Monday to about mid-afternoon Thursday, at which point you'll see posters on this site disappear like rats off a sinking ship. My point is that that thread won't break a record. And given that this thread has a good few days left, the total here is going to stand for a good long time. As for posting after Carnival, you may or may not be surprised at how cold posting gets...the Carnival hangover extends into the blogosphere. CB next Monday, I believe Naveen said. Eider's a coffee table? Hadn't heard that one yet. One of my earliest memories of Emerson was him explaining (I wanna say in 88) how exciting chute was going to be for Eider's heat because it was either going to break the record or spin. I remember asking my dad "who's that guy with the radio voice?"

Oh, and Naveen, since you seem to be this site's conduit to what's actually going on on-campus, I heard a nasty rumor about NO happy hour and NO signals at the house this year. Any more detaiils as to what will and won't be permitted drinking-wise, given the house's tenuous partial probationary status?
