PiKA Buggy Website
A Fringe Alum (Sam Swift) recently made a website with pictures of many past and current PiKA buggies. For those who do not know, this year Fringe will feature a team of Beta pushers. From Naveen. Update Link Fixed. Update II By popular request, this is being bumped to the top.
Sorry it should be www.pikabuggy.com
Does anyone else have trouble with the link in the story? Works for me, but maybe one of the other DTS eds corrected it...
Was Zeus terribly more innovative than its venerable predecessor Phantom? Zeus and Brazen always seemed like longstanding rivals with much in common ... small, refined, durable, winners ... I like to think Zeus set its record in 2000 because there was a scary looking tiger-striped buggy named Junior chasing it up hill 1. Alright, fair enough, but I don't think Zeus can claim all the credit. Jackal or Brim or Wyv could have won those races with those pushteams too. What Zeus has that none of the others can match is durability and dependability. It's not going to spin, and it's not often going to blow a tire. That's why it's stayed on top and earned the title 'prolific' (which I thought was quite the honor). Or at least, that's how it looks from where I stand. See, everyone knows it's the pushers.
I'm just glad Phoenix was so fast that they never actually were able to capture a photo of it.
Where's all the Dynasty photos?
I don't quite get why an old Fringe alum is doing this, but whatever...
Seeing these "unauthorized" pictures reminds me of when I made an offer to Hendrix to be "the guy who annoys the guy from Fringe who takes notes on us during rolls." It was basically going to involve me pretending to take notes on the guy who was taking notes. Except that I would've read my notes out loud, and they'd basically just be one-liners making fun of the guy. Hendrix declined, and I got to sleep in.
Hendrix should have approved the idea and then sent a guy to take notes on Decker oversleeping and missing rolls.
I love this site. I am going to start posting like I'm some old buggy guy who knows it all. . . oh wait, I am that guy!
Oh, and if Beta is pushing, who keeps the second place trophy? Fringe or Beta?
and I thought I had too many pictures of zeus
decker, don't forget the time fringe started pushing hill 4 left-handed because they though it was a pika secret to exchange from that side of the street. Not that it was a coincidence that our 3 hill 4's were left-handed (joiner, epps, me).....idiots.
I never realized I was supposed to write it Zeus©. And I had an over/under of Bean posting on this thread within 3 minutes. I'm really starting to worry. If nothing else, he can give us the trophy precedent from '56 when 3 Kap Sig brothers pushed for The Dorms and got 3rd place.
speaking of this, did anyone one else open the cmu carnival announcement and see a mr. wood giving a presentation on the history of buggy? (and all of your friends, blurry on the cover)
I love Hendrix. Looks like I picked the wrong afternoon to work. Wow! Nice site, good job Sam. But some things creep me out, like this photograph was, without a doubt, taken by my father: http://pikabuggy.com/v/Phantom/Endy_to_Burch_2.jp... I think it got posted on bhendrix in the 'Old School' album, so apparently alot of the fodder on that site was gathered from all over the place, perhaps the Beta Sigma 70's site or some of Wood's presentations as well (like in the case of some of those 'Classic' photos). Andy, we'll have to tell Brickner he made the 'Classic' section. Speaking of Wood's presentations, yes I believe at 1:30 pm on Friday of Carnival Tom will be giving one on "The History of Buggy." This will actually be his third presentation. If you've never seen either of the first two, they're LONG but interesting. I think the 2nd is on the CMU sweepstakes page right now, plus there are copies available here and there that someone could send.
My favorite presentation was when we (I don't even remember who exactly, but basically the officers at the time and me as the Rush chair, I think) went to Mace's house and he went through the history of PiKA, and graded each generation on the basis of IM football and Buggy before practicing his bartending skills on us and sending us home.
Oh, and switching gears here, if Andy's second comment isn't Great Commented to death, then we must have all become a bunch of gentler, kinder, assholes.
how do they not have a picture of pika right after they missed the push bar on hill 5 and the chair let out the f bomb of all f bombs?
so the track team didn't work. and they have moved on to beta? this is supposed to work? will they ask kappa next?
Send copies!!! Dont' pimp out my services!
I plan on being there, probably drunk.
you've already got an admirer: Is true. We talked about it all the time and exchanged rumors and legends. 'Dude, I heard that their buggy chair got a massive load of wood screws delivered at the house... WTF? Wood screws?' 'Yeah, I heard Bordick was covered in wood dust for like three months...'. i heard klaus was covered in wood dust all the time too. also, stoler's looking a little rough here. if you squint hard, i think you can see his brain leaking out his ear.
Hey, on the cover of that CMU Carnival "give me money" mailer - is that jim and rick in the background wearing phantom shirts?
I think it's Jim and jay frank blaise
It is Jim and jay frank blaise. I have a pic very similar to this one except of course the Fringe(?) guy isn't in it and the focus is on the people hanging around the truck.
you can certainly see chandy paez as well.
I was trying to figure out what year that was. it should be easy since jay frank blaise hasn't been to too many. any idea?
I don't know who this Shane McGuire fellow is, but I like the cut of his jib. I think prolific may be an understatement. Zeus has won more races than some organizations, such as Fringe, have won in their entire organization's history. WOW! Additionally, this buggy set a still standing Pika house record of 2:06.71. With a time only toped by the spirit of the late 80's, I'd say this buggy is much more than "durable and reliable". Posted by Shane McGuire on Thu 27 Mar 2008 11:13:23 AM EDT
Ryan, the year of the picture was '06. Also I am pretty sure you are just to the left of the pusher and are taking a picture. I agree the bags on the buggy are lame. Seriously how on earth is that really going to have any impact other than making you look stupid. I like to think it is some new rule requirement by sweepstakes, because that would make sense.
Yeah, I went to rolls the weekend of JT's wedding. This is a new sweepstakes rule all new drivers need to have bags on...
I took into consideration that that might be a new rule. The lame part is the fact that some body took the time to get plastic bags when a perfectly good parking meter cover is available for much less work
jay frank blaise was there in 06? Why dont I remember that? Oh right, because of the damage caused by carnival 06 and 07
Yes, the bags are mandatory now and it's a stupid rule. I've encouraged our guys time after time to mock the rule by taping the bag completely flat against the shell. I thought the rule was in effect before Ryan and Oof left, no? Can someone scan and post this mailer? Or is it available online? (Insert "I don't know why you wouldn't have received it Rick, after all it was sent to ALL alumni" joke here, Mayes.) Pretty sure no jay frank blaise in '06, or any year after '01.
again i'll point to the damage of the last 7 years, but i am pretty sure the rule was not in place when we were in school but michelle once asked us to put one on her. I'm sure the answer to that was no
Hell no, there was no rule like that in the good old days. I definitely would have taped a bag flat or perhaps taped bags to the follow car, pushers, blowing leaves, etc. and other subversive acts.
jay frank blaise was definitely there is '06. He was part of "Team We Take Your Money and You Suck Dick" in pong featuring him, me, Ravi, and Joiner.
Michelle definitely asked for a bag (the answer was definitely no). After her first roll for us ever and possibly THE slowest we've ever sent a buggy, she declared it 4 times as fast as she went on Raceday with Sig Tau the year before.
Holy crap! You know, after I posted, I thought maybe he was there for one of those marathon Ravi/Bricker/etc gambling pong sessions, but I just couldn't remember. I plead the same excuse Ryan's been using. Never tell Jay I thought he wasn't there. Especially since he may be rooming with me this year and he'll have limitless opportunity to Steam me Cleveland-style.
Shortly after this picture, Ravi promptly lost all of his gains to me in an ill advised stretch of personals and darts matches. It was the Casino philosophy of "whatever happens don't let them leave, get them back to the table".
My new background...I love how fijord is levitating... And MD deserves title of 'best buggy ever' as it was the one that broke the back of the 80's spirit streak, in the dark days of the rebellion.
Ah Michelle's slow rolls. That was the year I figured out how to take myself out of phantom.
The best part about that pong game was when Burch ripped all the money in half. BTW, this thread is absolutely hilarious.
Yeah, that was the best part of the game... for the losing team. I had to tape my money back together! And by "I", I mean "a pledge."
Jeff, that's a pretty good photo, so's this one: http://pikabuggy.com/v/Mad Dog/Tomforde_Maddog.jpg.html
Yes, but that picture doesn't have me in it.
i liked your old desktop background better.
yes, <...scoreboard<... that <...scoreboard<... was <...scoreboard<... a <...scoreboard<... good <...scoreboard<... motivational <...scoreboard<... picture.
scoreboard? what do you mean like, 2:06.71? (cue statile)
I thought the house record was 2:05.5...
Sweet Christ where did they dig up this one... http://pikabuggy.com/main.php?g2_view=dynamicalbu... Andy, after the picture of the Dog in your basement, I figured you were uploading pictures on that site. Is this your doing as well?
Oh yeah, I figured if they're going to give me server space to share my photos, what the hell. I pretty much want to take over this site and fill it with 20 year old pictures.
Yeah, but he's got the "I'm a mechanic but I've always wanted to push" scream down perfect.
i was excited to view the linke Rollins posted. that turned to pure disappointment to find that it wasn't Evan Rinkoff
And I thought it was going to be Paul.
Bordick, your pictures make me want to buy a scanner... nice additions.
This type of wonderful device makes it all possible.
http://www.hp.com/sbso/mbiz/all_in_one.html
And I haven't even scanned in ALL my pictures, just the good ones. I've actually got some that I framed that I have to scan, I've just been a little lazy. Come on fellas, bust out those old photos!
scoreboard, as in 3. Anyone (other than bordick) remember this? Color was briefly added to some buggies my freshman year at a failed attempt at fraternizing with a driver. As much fun as I am having looking at all these old pictures, I am surprised (expecially considering the FOAD concentration in the audience) that there hasn't been discussion of a network attack on this site to prevent it from disseminating our secrets.
Yeah, but we tie on number of third places. Mine was on a B team, though.
besides, there are plenty of kids now with 4 wins.
Ouch, Jon. Jeff, you'll have to be careful to not incur scoreboard wrath of certain younguns. There are two guys from '06 who are each a 4. For real. And maybe about 5 years ago I'd have been upset at that site. But given the fact that we're as responsible as anyone else for making publicly available a bunch of photos (because a large portion of those photos are just snagged from sites hosted by pikes), we don't really have too much of a legit gripe at this point. And seeing the photos they've taken themselves or collected from other sources gives insight as to who is watching when, from where, and to what extent, so that's sort of neat. Plus, on that site, they've said the pikes "are being good sports about it" so I don't wanna rock that boat at this point. And probably most importantly...I pretty much defer to Wood on what is to be talked about and what is not, and based on some of the stuff he's disclosed in his first two "History of" presentations, the stuff on that site is pretty tame in comparison. Anyone intrigued by this statement should definitely be at his third, this Carnival Friday at 1:30. Including the non-pikes I know are lurking out there ;)
Personally, I'm all for some of our "secrets" getting out there. 2000, even with the record, always felt like an empty win for me because there was no way we were going to lose that race. 4 seconds may have been embarassing, but it was also pretty hollow. When winning becomes a relief, then it kinda just sucks. Although, I love the idea that we have so many junior alumni since not many of them have actually seen a loss. I think everyone pre 04 ought to be making these new kids get us beers for pong.
Not sure who just shoved, but he seems pretty close to eliminating the need for woman-kind forever http://pikabuggy.com/v/Zeus/buggy 4_9_050002.JPG.html
I know I'm old. I've seen that number before, but I can't figure out what it means.
I get neither your comment nor Will's, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
Looking at the most popular threads, I think 'Boys in Blue' might be the greatest of all time. It was about beating speeding tickets, immediately hijacked into an NBA finals discussion which turned into 'How to save non-football sports - except hockey, which is dead.' And it ends with Battle Beasts. It's a sprawling trainwreck that's hard to look away from.
And Dave, you weren't there when a certain someone who is now engaged and was then a buggy chair, painted 206.70 on the kitchen bulkhead, as motivation. Possibly for eating Tom food.
Back before Oof knew the copious and flattering tears of defeat, he decided that we were going to break the course record. His goal time was, 2:05.5. He attempted to instill a sense of purpose into the house populace by stencil painting in black, above the breakfast bar said 2:05.5. That yearalso saw the chairman quit which no one talks about. This result of yet another elevation/election recommendation fouled up by bth. I was the first. Klaus as chair, numero dos. Lesson, don't vote for a hendrix endorsement.
the other point is that oof was trying to make a post about buggy be the most commented on the site. So he was just inflating the count. Hence my post that hendrix linked to. and yes, it's been all downhill since then. i can barely spell my own name these days.
that's a great thread. I'm saddened to think it was my being away in europe that allowed such greatness to occur.
seriously, can we stop talking about oofs tears of defeat. it is around now every year i start to get a certain twitch in my eye. don't make it worse
Ah, I get it now. That is funny... I had a feeling this story would generate a lot of comments when I approved it. Sam isn't taking enough advantage of the fact that we're all going over to his site. He needs to start selling ad space to breweries and porn sites. Come to think of it, we should start doing that at DTS...
Anyone know where I can get a DVD of a psyche tape in the 94-97 era? My 95 tape is hurtin'.
This is the part where Mayes declares all psyche tapes made before 99 crap.
And the part where I say, as I have ever year, that i plan on getting all of my tapes made into dvds to hand out. And in two weeks i remember that i really had no intention of doing that. so who wants a dvd or 99 and 00?
This is the part where I give Jim a hard time for never making me the '99 tape he promised me a few years ago. So Ryan will you pretty please make me a '99 and '00 dvd.
you got it... i look forward to you punching me in two weeks for once again failing you.
Ryan, I'd absolutely love one as well if you can manage to make two... there is a place on Mt. Royal in Shaler that does the conversion stuff if you need a hand (at least there used to be one). Dave, google ads isn't a bad idea... maybe it could pay for the hosting fees? I don't even remember how much I paid (or when it expires)... guess i should look into that.
I'm probably not coming this year so Ryan you are safe from punching. Although I might be able to get another driver to do it for me....
how much are internet clubhouse fees? Don't we have pledges to do this for us? Or are they not trustable with something as sacred as an ancient buggy psyche tape...?
Anyone find the Compubookie link for this year yet? (Shameless attempt to keep this thread alive)
So it turns out the house isn’t a big fan of the pikabuggy website and that is why all those disclaimers came up on the site about it being unofficial. Since half of those photographs are from Facebook or Tom Wood’s presentation there probably isn’t much room to complain though. The third floor of CFA has equipment to convert VHS to DVD and I am certain the Spring pledge class would be happy to help you out.
Compubookie comes out the Monday before Carnival
I assumed Tom was being very very generic (mostly historic). If that is not the case, what is the point of doing these presentations?
yeah, i want one of those dvd's too, since, like, I made them. Maybe bth could set up some sort of torrent, or whatever the kids are using these days.
Ryan,
I think Wood is trying to maintain interest in buggy as it seems to be waning on campus. He tells a good story and I can't wait to see it live. I just hope I'm not too hammered.
I guess that is my question. Is the intended audience students and campus, or is it for old fat guys to learn about the history before they got there? Who are you kidding? There is no way you wont be too hammered
Andy, I'll have a jug of bloody mary's that's going to interfere with your effort to not be hammered.
You mean hammered, or "not allowed on stage to accept a buggy win" hammered?
how do we get this thread top-posted again? It's about to be rotated off the front page with all the other unimportant stuff that has been posted of late...
Pork Capita and Nazi-themed orgies are pretty important.
Oh, bumped to the top. You guys are cheaters, just like PiKA buggy.
I think it's awesome and hilarious that you guys are the biggest fans of the site. it was supposed to be retaliation for them sending the goon squad after me during a nice peaceful morning of rolls. I guess it did make the current kids mad though, so that's all good. the site currently has 26,000 pageviews over 1,500 visits by 750 unique visitors, so I guess there was demand for pictures of pika buggies. just think how popular they would be if somebody spent more than 10 minutes on the paint job. good to see i'm not the only one that can't resist the buggy mood come late-march. see you guys around at the races.
ohhhhhhhhhh shit. the paint job. That was our down fall. i hate learning things when it is too late.
Hey Sam... thanks for posting over here. You have a great thing going over at your site... the sheer amount of pics that you have collected is pretty impressive. A couple of questions: 1. Did you find most of them online? 2. Are you open to people adding more? 3. Why no Fringe buggies (or other organizations, for that matter)? It would be very cool to have others on there to compare / reminisce! ... and we both know that paint jobs are for design competition.
answer to 3. It's called pikabuggy.com. Not fringebuggy.com.
What the deuce is the goon squad? Angry, overweight guys in hoodies = mechanics. Not sure who else goes to rolls. Re: #2 from JT, I think anyone can add pics like bordick did.
I'm going to have to defer to Rob on this one, but I think a goon is just a guy who can't handle the puck. So probably most of PiKA.
ha. then i guess we have recently taken Georges off that list. The guy is a stick handlin machine
Mayes, there are ways to change that, much like how I currently have RememberThatOneHR.com redirecting to your old Andrew student website.
(note, don't bother checking that)
Well, I could be wrong, but I believe "goon squad" is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.
Good squad is the name of any soccer team chad harper makes an appearance in goal for.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goon I didn't do much looking around online for pictures. most of them were taken by people I know. now that other people are adding them, I can't really keep track of where they're coming from. but when you think of how many cameras are out at rolls and raceday every year, it's not hard to put together a few hundred pictures. hence my point of it being stupid to harass people. yeah, definitely. I had to turn off the anonymous uploads after we got some generous contributions of nasty porn from folks at the house, but go ahead and make an account. I'll have to add new albums for desperado and maverick pretty soon. having other pictures on there didn't really occur to me since I was just doing it to piss them off, but you're right it would be cool. maybe i'll get to work on everyoneelse'sbuggies.com
If you need some hosting or development help or something, let us know... I'm sure some of our peeps would be more than happy to help out with a buggy related picture project. Plus, if you make a Fringe site, then the current Fringe people could have their chance to upload nasty porn too! It's a win-win really...
Sam, those generous porn contributions didn't all come from the house. tubgirl lemonparty goatse bottleguy 2girls1cup NSFW
Hey, Don't forget an album for oldies but goodies like Mach II, Renegade, Vengeance. Hell, I think I have some of King Solomon!!! I refuse to refer to buggies that never rolled like Barn, Abortion, etc.
. . .and doesn't it add a nice, Non-PC feel to call them Goombas vice Goons?
Oh yeah, how about a hidden link for all the porn. Isn't that why Al Gore invented the internets?
Josh, pics of Fringe buggies: http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/fringe/buggy/index... http://www.fringe.org/ I think by "goon squad" he may be referring to the guy making an obvious attempt to block someone photographing: http://pikabuggy.com/v/Raceday08/00033.jpg.html The last reference to a goon squad at rolls that I remember was when SDC was taking a bunch of pictures one day, and Ball-Sac happened to be out at rolls, still wrapped in the blanket he slept under. Paul "encouraged" him to interfere with the picture-taking, so Sac went over to the camera guy, and everywhere he pointed it to take a picture, Sac got in the way, opened up the blanket, and basically acted as obnoxiously as possible. Highly comical for us, definitely an enormous pain in the ass for SDC. Matt Solitro came over to me and said, "Can't you do something about your goon squad?" And I said, "You know, I could say something, but I really don't think it's going to make a difference."
This one brings back memories...
Good find JT. Man the paint job on that baby was unreal
Wow, those paint jobs certainly are spiffy. They must win a lot of races...
i love how Fringe Fan #1 talks shit but I'm pretty sure he's seen no more than 2 actual buggy races.
I was just remarking to Hendrix the other day how buggy talk gets me excited for Carnival even though I'm pretty sure I've only made it out to about 50% of the races as an alumn, despite being at Carnival every year. Sleep is an important part of a Carnival drinking strategy.
Speaking of an important part of a Carnival Drinking Strategy:
I've gotten Derek's permission to host a Drinking Mitchell event at his place in Shadyside. I'm thinking like 2 PM on Friday. What do other people think? If you never heard of Drinking Mitchell, it's a drinking game that is probably the greatest thing to come out of the house in the last 5 years...
What? and miss Wood's trip down memory lane? Surely you jest.
Speaking of an important part of a Carnival Drinking Strategy: The R to the double O to the T S The legendary roots crew, your 2008 Carnival Band.
holy fucking shit. i forget how this works... how do we go about skeezin our way into this?
The best part about Fringe is that, win or lose, they know how to have a good time.
I can't remember why I ripped those dollars in half. I am, however, quite certain, that it was the appropriate thing to do.
1. I'm pretty sure they were $20's 2. It was 100% appropriate Burch, are you coming this year? If so, i'll try to remember to hit the ATM at the airport.
Sorry JT, I was there, much less pongified than you, and they were singles. Somebody (BTH) has pictures, but they're blurry...
There were ones and fives and at least one ten too. At some point, we were betting with twenties as well.
If you had tried to tell me there was pong and gambling and Ravi and denominations of money smaller than twenties I would have called you a goddamn liar.
nope, I'm not making it this year. but someone might want to bring some scotch tape in case I show up out of the blue.
Bean - I usually start with a $20 (or a hunge if I have one), but that's typically scoffed at. But usually if you start with a $20, someone will throw SOME money on the table. And then you just have to get them drunk enough OR make sure they have no smaller bills available - and BLAM! the big bucks are on the table. It's a strategy see... And BTW - Burch may not remember, but after he ripped apart the money, I told him that in my religion money was a form of God and that he disrespected God and I was insulted and he apologized to me (although it was probably insincere cause he hates non-white people). Hopefully there will be some form of TWTYMAYSD representing at carnival this year...
Oh, I respect the strateg(er)y. And I know what the team name spelled out is supposed to be...but is it a coincidence that in letter string form it looks like Twatty Mayes D? Film at 11.
I don't remember that at all... Rugby, I had no idea you were jewish.
Only part Jewish - my ancestors used to live on an Island off the coast of Israel that was home to primarily Irish Jewish people. My entire last name back then was O'Pimplaskarinman. However, My Great-Great Grand Uncle, Reverend Lezgo O'Pimplaskarinman was tired of people removing the "laskar" from the name and calling him "Reverend Lezgo O'Pimpinman". So he dropped the inman from the last name and we were just the O'Pimplaskars from then on. I'm sure people on here know the story of why the "O'" apostrophe was dropped later on - so I won't bore you with those details.
One of the best comments EVER
I'm confused - who is posting as shoot the dog over there and why the cut and paste of bean's comment here. It makes no sense.
i'm confused too... how can you be jewish AND irish?
I'm with Marissa. I don't get what's going on there.
I'm pretty sure the main character in Ulysses was both Irish and Jewish.
How dare you doubt the existence of my people! Who are you? Josh Burch? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_... And yes, Leopold Bloom was Irish and Jewish. But I don't think he was a Pike.
I felt inspired to put up my own pictures - http://picasaweb.google.com/mrisarney
D'oh. These are awesome. Thanks.
Wow great photos Marissa. There are some skinny people in there. And one really chubby one. Re: ShootTheDog. For a brief moment I thought there was a bot or something that had tracked my pasting of the link for the Endy-Burch photo over here and then pasted my comment with it back over there, but then I noticed we pasted some other links here without the same thing happening. I can't figure out who (s)he is - yet - but it's a fun game.
I just started through these (production will be at an all time high today I think) and man I am entertained. For example, this is exactly my dream way to wake up... http://picasaweb.google.com/mrisarney/Carnival200...
oh shit. hendrix used to have a nipple growing out of his ear? http://picasaweb.google.com/mrisarney/Formal1997/...
Well done. Great Comment indeed.
What's the DTS comment record?
I don't know but it takes my connection here at work about 45 seconds to load this thread. Oye.
Dude where's the photos of Formal 96 when I stayed at the house with El-Rod? [shiver]
Man, remember when we could drink in public when we were underage? Those were the days.
http://picasaweb.google.com/mrisarney/Carnival199. . .
i would say Pretnar ruined that for us, but he was actually the year before that picture
No, I think our downfall was when the cops realized "Hey, those guys are drinking in public and they are underage. Aren't both of those things illegal?".
It was all downhill from there.
Holy crap we think alike. Having gone through all of Marissa's photos, I know exactly what photos naj's and jm's links will bring up. I almost posted links to those as well, with similar comments. And yes, DR, even with the T1 at work this thread takes a while to load here too. So this is #157. Assuming the Carnival thread will migrate to the inevitable Compubookie post (won't the Tartan/TCpulse have that on Monday or so?), we have a few days to get to <...177...> I for one welcome the new record-holder for comments. And really, without any forced or artificial number-pumping. (You'll notice I only attached this thought to a comment actually pursuant to the relative thread.)
Ugh. Carnival '99 was the worst one ever. Yeah sure, we swept. And year sure, we got the 1-3-5*. And yeah sure, it was the first time we had won since '96. But we had to wait until freakin' Sunday. God that was annoying...
I made a quick code hack to speed things up and keep from crashing browsers. The comment links will bring up the last 25 comments for a given thread with a link to the next 25 at the bottom if there are indeed anymore.
whatever, the only people awake after 2 pm were me, burch, dean, and julie bean.
julie bean was alive, barely. i dont know that i'd call that awake.
you were one of the sleepy ones. Trust me, she made it to the end with the three of us. Just ask burch.
i understand i was sleeping. but i also know i have pictures of her before and after and it doesn't take much to make the jump that while she wasn't asleep, I don't know that I'd call her awake
Agreed, Jim. http://picasaweb.google.com/mrisarney/Carnival199... Nice hack, Bth. I believe I was technically awake, as were a bunch of us, until we all sat down to watch Simpsons on Sunday evening. And watching us drop at that point must have been like watching the Hale-Bopp comet followers. But yes, from mid-afternoon on I'm not sure that you would call the state I was in "awake." Upright - and barely at that - but I don't know about awake. And yeah, for the most part Dave, Sunday Carnivals aren't great. A bunch of alumni have left, no radio broadcast for races, no APhiO to do the leader board, you have to go to classes the next day, no official party Sunday night, and the party for those able to party on Saturday probably had to be pretty toned down. Winning made it all okay though, like I imagine it made it okay in '90. I can't imagine what it must have been like in '81 though - they got rained out the entire Carnival weekend, had to race the following weekend, and spun.
Is this Tom Wood's presentation? I haven't looked through the whole thing - it's huge - but quickly found a few gems. If nothing else, skip to the very last slide. Slide 246 is interesting too (yes, I said 246). Mayes will be interested in page 240. Also, I never realized PiKA had dropping pushbars. Also didn't realize that Sig Nu had acutally named a buggy ESP that won design. Shows what I know. Also, there is mention of some old videos. I apologize to anyone who expected to see Bean within the next 10 hours.
242 is good. I'm calling the spike next to 2000 as Jim's Pile Of Time.
Does anyone have the ppt of that presentation? I feel compelled to edit the shit out of that thing.
As much as I want to see Tom's presentation this year, any presentation that includes a .ppt deck 286 slides long scares the living shit out of me.
.... if only slide 286 came with sound.
That's the average times for the top 6 teams each year, dink. How is that my doing? Maybe we shouldn't have "cut" you from A team in '99. I also missed your name listed on page 236, unlike mine. Checkmate!
You were the manager. Too much credit. Too much blame. Same story every time.
I'm aware of what the chart was. Really, all it means is that there was an inordinate amount of hilarious spins. But the name is catchy, so I'm keeping it.
I'm going to call it the "Blizzard of '99" because it is equally as exaggerated as your title. "1,3,5,1,5 Motherf*uckers" - Future Mrs.Oxnard We are so breaking 177......
What's buggy? Where's the Booth thread?
Now that I've read in tom's presentations that spirit's record time was done with snow on the ground, I don't think that line of arguments holds water anymore. Besides, I thought it was a hurricane.
I am still pissed that everyone fell asleep during the simpsons.
Okay, now it's time to migrate to the compubookie thread, so we can make that the longest thread ever.
Jeff, you're right in that there's no reason to expect the volume of buggy-related comments per day to drop (even once we switch threads), but we'll only have that thread alive for a few days - Monday to about mid-afternoon Thursday, at which point you'll see posters on this site disappear like rats off a sinking ship. My point is that that thread won't break a record. And given that this thread has a good few days left, the total here is going to stand for a good long time. As for posting after Carnival, you may or may not be surprised at how cold posting gets...the Carnival hangover extends into the blogosphere. Wasn't there a graph at one point showing the enormous dropoff of bhendrix activity during and after Carnival one year?
Did Jim say dink? That is awesome
I think I have wood's presentation in .ppt. I have it on CD at home. I'm in Maine right now. By the way, all that history is basic knowledge. Don't tell me some of those youngsters don't know what ESP means!!! You probably also don't know that King Eider has been made into a coffee table at some old alum's house.
When does Compubookie come out? Next Monday?
Yeah, it should come out Monday. Everybody knows what ESP means, I just didn't know they actually had named a buggy that. Which DU buggy did PiKA throw in a river?
CB next Monday, I believe Naveen said. Eider's a coffee table? Hadn't heard that one yet. One of my earliest memories of Emerson was him explaining (I wanna say in 88) how exciting chute was going to be for Eider's heat because it was either going to break the record or spin. I remember asking my dad "who's that guy with the radio voice?" Oh, and Naveen, since you seem to be this site's conduit to what's actually going on on-campus, I heard a nasty rumor about NO happy hour and NO signals at the house this year. Any more detaiils as to what will and won't be permitted drinking-wise, given the house's tenuous partial probationary status? Decker, you may be surprised with what you don't know, but I'm not ;)
I did expect to see more Eider data, as I thought that was a breakthrough at the time, as it was the end of the 2 wheel buggies.
Based on Bruce's post I guess there is no happy hour but the house says drinking and playing signals is fine. Compubookie comes out Monday.
I think on the Pika House page. (http://www.cmupikes.org/forums/index.php)
He emailed me and said no Happy hour at the house. No signals at the house. and dont' expect a Sat. night party. However, brunch will be served Friday and Sat.
Bruce actually just sent something out like that to the house dlist too. I dont think they will be buying much beer - but based on the Kilt and a few people I have spoken to there there will be drinking but most likely not much partying.
Does this mean no pong either? I need to know, ASAP
By the way, Saturday morning instead of listening to the races online I'll be exchanging vows. Kind of a last minute (started planning it like a week and a half ago) semi elopement style wedding in the Outer Banks. Anyone dumb enough to be near there and not at carnival that weekend let me know... Then it will be two joshes down. One to go...
Jackass. Eloping during Carnival? Not cool. Eloping AT Carnival. . . Waaaaaaay cool. We could do a ceremony on the Fire Truck.
Only tools get married on the Outer Banks.
For those venturing out to the Shady Grove come Carnival Weekend, be warned. It's now a lot of lounge furniture and wood paneling. And car bombs.
Actually, I didn't even realize it was carnival weekend when I made the plans. I had to squeeze the time off out of them. It was hard for them to say no to my own wedding though. Fire truck wedding sounds great, but I don't think Lina would enjoy spending her wedding night drinking warm beast while playing pong. Of course there may not be pong? that would piss me off, and I won't even be there.
The pictures of the 1977 race (starting with 172) are insane for several reasons as you page through.
It is officially my favorite week of the year. Good thing this site went down on Friday because that is clearly the end of my productivity for awhile
So am I officially the only old fart not showing up? Maybe I can sneak in for one of Mayes' 10 year reunions....
