Arnie's Speech. FYI - the Nixon debate he menions never actually happened. Laura Bush's Speech. Jenna and Babs' Speech. Dude, C'mon... Wed Sep 1 2004
Bush turns down Britney. (article has excellent preview pic of her years as a showgirl) Bush fears she's all 'crudded up' and has been 'filled out like an application'. Okay, maybe not, but the party didn't want her at the convention.

Woman arrested for using $200 bill with W's pic on it. Greensburg PA represent. As Nino points out - Greensburg, Pa should be proud. The person that tried to pass this should be disenfranchised. The person who accpeted it should be shot. . . . Thanks to him for the link.

Porn 'slips' into Hempfield motivational presentation. Could be a new weight loss technique - The teacher who produced the presentation was so upset by the mistake that she couldn't eat for a day, Doyle said. Ryan adds "I know Bean played a part in this." No mention of a paper bag with a 5th of whiskey in it, but you never know. Thanks to Ryan for the link.

Bush League Wed Sep 1 2004
What does 9/11 tell us about Bush? Nothing.
But isn't a president supposed to, um, do things? Isn't it a bit strange to praise a man's leadership not for doing something, but for maintaining a certain appearance?
Keep counting. Wed Sep 1 2004
Tickers for all kinds of numbers. Stats are good.
Miller Time Thu Sep 2 2004
Zell Miller's time to be an idiot. Summary: George Bush has a big, giant penis. John Kerry is a pussy. Therefore, we should elect W. I love lines like this:
I first got to know George W. Bush when we served as governors together. I admire this man. I am moved by the respect he shows the first lady, his unabashed love for his parents and his daughters...
Why is this even in there? Implying Kerry doesn't respect his wife, love his kids?
... and the fact that he is unashamed of his belief that God is not indifferent to America.
Translation: Bush is proud that God loves America. ChurchState and a mandate from above. Sounds like a winning formula to me.
Another classic. Thu Sep 2 2004
Pit Bull bites off owner's genitals. Don't know if they're talking about Big Jim, the twins, or all three of 'em. Anyway, own a pit bull, take your chances. Thanks to Arjen for this one.
Cheney of Command Thu Sep 2 2004
Dick just being Dick. The rest of it is through the click. I realize most people aren't interested in my political views, and this is a long one. Businesses are creating jobs. People are returning to work. Where?
Mortgage rates are low, and home ownership in this country is at an all-time high. The Bush tax cuts are working. The President doesn't control interest rates. Home ownership is high because mortgage rates were low. Not because somebody had an extra $500 a year.
Our nation has the best health care in the world and President Bush is making it more affordable and accessible to all Americans. How exactly is that working?
Under this President's leadership, we will reform medical liability so the system serves patients and good doctors, not personal injury lawyers. Like that asshole John Edwards, right? I can't imagine you've ever gotten money from the trial lawyers, right? Nothing like a good empty promise that you've had four years to work on.
America also awakened to a possibility even more lethal: this enemy, whose hatred of us is limitless, armed with chemical, biological, or even nuclear weapons. You mean Iran? North Korea? But not Iraq, right?
Just as surely as the Nazis during World War II and the Soviets during the Cold War, the enemy we face today is bent on our destruction. Everybody drink two - he said 'Nazis'. Comparing the magnitude of the Nazis to the terrorists does a disservice the millions of people they killed. The Soviets were bent on our destruction because we were bent on thiers. And vice versa. See how that works?
As in other times, we are in a war we did not start, and have no choice but to win. Except your boss said the other day that you can't win. And was 'Mission Accomplished' the point we 'won' the war in Iraq?
From the beginning, the president made clear that the terrorists would be dealt with and that anyone who supports, protects or harbors them would be held to account. Unless your country's name is 'Saudi Arabia'. Then you get a free pass.
In Afghanistan, the camps where terrorists trained to kill Americans have been shut down and the Taliban driven from power. You mean the ones we set up to help keep the Soviets out? Good thing.
In Iraq, we dealt with a gathering threat and removed the regime of Saddam Hussein. Gathering threat of what? Anyone? Anyone? Is he trying to imply terrorist links? The horse is dead, dude.
The most important result thus far, and it is a very important one, is that the black-market network that supplied nuclear weapons technology to Libya, as well as to Iran and North Korea, has been shut down. And the ring-leaders were allowed to go free. Unless your country starts with 'P' and ends with 'akistan'. The single greatest source of nuclear proliferation in the world comes from there, and President Mussharif (sp) pardons him? Right, Dick, keep going. And what are your plans for North Korea, by the way?
They [soldiers] have faced hard duty and long deployments. Do you think they would have been shorter and easier if you had any idea what you were getting into? Or if your boss hadn't told everyone to 'Bring it on'?
Under President Bush, we have put in place new policies and created new institutions to defend America, to stop terrorist violence at its source, and to help move the Middle East away from old hatreds and resentments and toward the lasting peace that only freedom can bring. Just don't expect us to follow that 'Constitution' thing in order to bring them about. So those old hatreds and resentments will be done by what? Blowing the hell out of their countries? Keeping troops in holy lands?
Even in this post-9/11 period, Senator Kerry doesn't appear to understand how the world has changed. He talks about leading a "more sensitive war on terror"... He's a pussy everybody!! Giant vagina!! I had a string of student deferments, so I never served, but man, he may as well be French.
We are faced with an enemy who seeks the deadliest of weapons to use against us, and we cannot wait for the next attack. We must do everything we can to prevent it, and that includes the use of military force. Stopping nuclear proliferation at the sources (all known) does not require military force.
Senator Kerry denounces American action when other countries don't approve, as if the whole object of our foreign policy were to please a few persistent critics. You mean like most of the world?
But, in fact, in the global war on terror, as in Afghanistan and Iraq, President Bush has brought many allies to our side. In the coalition of the willing? Right. Keep dreaming.

Zell = Creepy Star Wars guy I can't think of. Also, Cheney not looking so hot. In case anyone was wondering, Cheney is 64, Kerry is 62, Edwards is 51, and W is 58. For some reason I always thought Cheney was well past 70. He started early. Youngest Chief of Staff ever at 35. huh.

Petition to keep the assault weapons ban. It's being put together by MoveOn.org, but no matter what you think of them, it doesn't make much sense to have assault weapons available for purchase.
This is not a partisan issue -- the assault weapons ban was supported by Presidents Reagan, Ford, Carter, and Clinton, and by Republicans Tom Ridge and Rudy Giuliani. The ban is supported by 74 percent of American voters, by Republicans and Democrats on the committees that investigated 9/11, and by virtually every police officers' association including the Major Cities Chiefs Association, International Brotherhood of Police Officers , National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), National Black Police Association, and Hispanic American Police Command Officers Association.

Short articles are confusing. Tue Sep 7 2004
Reuters report of CBO projection of $2.29 trillion budget deficit 2005-2014. The CBO calculated the deficits year by year and then added them up to get the 2.29 trillion. This is not the one year deficit for 2014. The 2.29 trillion is the total debt to be incurred by the US from now until 2014. I was really confused by the report (which may be a result of the CBO's press release). Here's the CBO report they reference. Of note is the deficit by % of GDP, which is showing that this year and next are going to be rough, with things getting a little better each year. This assumes current policies, though, of which one is the expiration of the tax cuts currently in place. Update AP covers the report. Some additional info from the AP, albeit with a more political slant.

College kids drink more than anyone thought. I guess we shouldn't tell them about Golf, the 250, and Champagne ceremony... The one thing that's odd is that it's self-reported, so I would think that it's actually a little high. Oh yea, I usually have like, uh, eight... teen beers over the course of seven ... minutes.
Holy Crap Wed Sep 8 2004
West Virginian thinking about throwing away his electoral college vote. If W carries WV, he'll either vote for a third party or not vote at all. This is nuts. It's been done before, but if the election is a tie, it would decide it (or is the rule that you have to get a majority and then it goes to the House?). Of course, if any other electors decide to start thinking independantly, we're all screwed, no matter what. Link stolen from Daily Kos.

Responsible Government. Thu Sep 9 2004
Assault weapon ban dies next Monday. In case you were hoping to buy an AK-47 next week, please thank the NRA and Congress. If the police want a law passed that does nothing except hurt gun manufacturer sales and prevent gun nuts from buying even more hardware, who are you going to side with? Oh, right, the ones that pay you. I forgot. Does the NRA have video tapes of you playing golf with Satan?

Review of the new F-150. From Ryan: I have never been in the new one, but I loved the old one and thought it was a nice mix of luxury and toughness (the combo reminds me of you in fact). If the new one is that much better, then I'm really impressed. Your thoughts? I've also not been in one, but everything I've read and heard makes it seem like they're really improved it. I mean, it's got a fully boxed frame for gosh sakes. I think I'd have a tough time ponying up 38 large for one (they tested a super-luxury one), but then again, I'd have no problem dropping 150 on an Aston Martin. Anybody else?

Red Bull & Vodka may not be a miracle drink. I'm a bit confused by their study, since they were measuring their performance on a bicycle, not at a club in the wee hours. They did notive elevated heart rates and adrenaline, which seems right, but why didn't they look at the effect on fatigue? Anyway, pretty interesting. Thanks to Shek for the link.
Crap-tastic. Tue Sep 21 2004
CBS says Bush service memos are 'not reliable' a.k.a. fake. Well, that's the last time I side with CBS instead of an internet poster. The amount of spin and back and forth bitching in the article is mind-blowing, especially toward the end. And for extra conspiracy theory points, my Dad pointed out the idea that perhaps Republicans had created the memos.
Baked Hamm Tue Sep 21 2004
Opinion piece on why Paull Hamm should give up his medal. The judges screwed up and denied the bronze winner .1 point that would have given him the gold and Hamm the silver. According to all the rules, it is Hamm's to keep. This guy could have written his article in about two sentences, but instead he has to bring up the fact that we should take special notice because the bronze guy is Korean and all this other extraneous crap. He should give it up because it's the right thing to do. That's it. Update In retrospect, I was totally wrong about this one. I think the news has died down enough to see what was really going on. Anyway, congrats to Hamm on his gold.
Book Report Tue Sep 21 2004

New DB9 uses a neural network to manage engine misfires. It's a little PR-ish, but it's amazing how much tech is going into cars now. I didn't know much about this other than movie-Terminator speak, so here's the Wikipedia article on neural networks.
Breakin' the law II Mon Sep 27 2004
Guy getting 205 ticket was on an RC51. The bike was apparently stock, except for perhaps the obligatory Loud Pipe (that saves lives). The bike couldn't really get past 165mph. Which means the cop's stopwatch timing was off by over a second. 5.45 seconds vs 4.36 over the 1/4 mile.

Football fans for truth. News Flash: Kerry not 'regular guy'. Thanks to Jeanine for this one.

Worst Jobs in history. Such winners as King's ass wiper (no TP) and Roman gold miner. I got a 90 on the quiz. Re-armoring knights in battle, here I come.
Stop buying coffee. Tue Sep 28 2004
Improve your finances on $10/day. There's some links in the article that my be more valuable than the article itself, but there ya' go. I feel like coming up with an additional $300/mo may be tough, but the upside is pretty sweet.
What, he couldn't afford it? Tue Sep 28 2004
Lance Armstrong got his GTO 'Overhauled'. From Mr. Rollins: And I thought the show reached its peak of celebrity-cred with the Ian Ziering episode. I see I'm not the only one watching this show. It's an okay show, they just tend to put too much emphasis on the 'zany trickery' part and not enough on the 'how to tune a carb' part. On a side note, if you haven't been watching 'Rides', I highly recommend it. Last week they did a show on how a concept car went from drawing to, uh, well, rolling fiberglass. It was pretty sweet. And on a 2nd side note, American Chopper is building a Lance bike, which I guess they debuted on the Tonight show. Episode 1 was on last night, so you can probably catch the re-run sometime and Epsidoe 2 is on next Monday.
Big Brothers Tue Sep 28 2004
Pledges at the fence. The long awaited sequel to Gorillas in the Mist. Go PiKA and stuff. Thanks to Stowe for this one.
Like dust in the wind. Tue Sep 28 2004
New sailboats haul ass. There's a new boat design that uses movable balast and keels to go faster. I don't pretend to understand about 1/2 the sailing terms, but pretty cool, anyway. I would have figured they had rules about this, but I guess not.
Oh, the back and forth. Tue Sep 28 2004
Comedy Central figures out who stoned slackers are. As a quasi-update to the story from a couple days ago, Comedy Centreal looked into the Daily Show audience vs. O'Reilly's audience. Turns out the Daily Show audience has more college graduates, but no figures on how many watch stoned. And if anyone wondered who's behind the show, just tune into the Emmy broadcast next year to see all 20 twenty- or thirty-something bookish, pale white dudes on stage. Rob, Bob, and Jay sent this one in. Thanks Rob, Bob, and Jay.

The Monday Night Football Remote. So first I tell you to save your money, then I tempt you with the goodness that is a football remote control. Neato.
Cumulative Time Suck Tue Sep 28 2004
I made a new page showing most commented on stories and a new and improved version of the "Leading Commenters" thing. If you want me to reconcile 2 or more e-mail addresses that you've used into one address, put it in the comments and I'll see what I can do. e.g. make josh@somewhere.net into josh@anothersite.com.

California bans smoking in prisons. In case you're wondering what the outcome of this will be, I recommend seeing the HBO movie "Against the Wall".Thanks to Nino for all of this.

Rolling Stone interview with Bruce Springsteen. The Boss has quite a bit to say.

Capitol Hill staffers vote for accolades. I'd like to congratulate our own Rick Santorum on wins in the "No Rocket Scientist" and "Biggest Kerry Attacker"categories, a bronze for "Biggest Windbag", and honorable mentions in the "CSPAN Ham" and "No Altar Boy" contests. Way to knock 'em dead.
Take De Bait.. Wed Sep 29 2004
How to debate Bush by Al Gore. Is this the same guy that ran 4 years ago? The first debate is tomorrow night, so hopefully Kerry's been watching film, which should include Bush vs. Bush. one of the all-time great Daily Show sketches.
No Child left behind. Wed Sep 29 2004
Parents pissed teacher gave out inappropriate math test. Something tells me they didn't know it was a giant joke. One version is over here. There are also versions for various cities, etc.
Huh? Wed Sep 29 2004
OK. So I'm learning/going through Cold Fusion right now, and it seems like it's really similar to ASP and PHP. It seems to have more nifty shortcuts and handy presentation objects built into one-tag syntax, but can somebody tell me the difference between CF and either ASP or PHP? I feel like I'm missing something huge.

Au revoir Expos. Wed Sep 29 2004
Looks like the Expos are finally moving to D.C. From Blum: Check out the incentives they gave the owner of the Orioles so he wouldn't block the deal. New York, LA, and Chicago have two Baseball teams with no strings attached yet this guy gets reimbursed by MLB if his revenues drop below a certain percentage. Thanks to Blum for the all of this.
Say it with me Nelson... Wed Sep 29 2004
Ladder 49 sucks. Although I'm sure it will open big at the box office and Travolta will somehow retain his 'bankable star' status, even though he hasn't made a good movie since Pulp Fiction.

Elementary school kids got served margaritas at lunch. It was an 'accident'.
It's getting thick. Thu Sep 30 2004
Breakdown of the response techniques for the Presidential debate. I'm all for candidates being accountable, but this seems to be taking things too far. The 2nd to last paragraph seems to sum it up nicely. "I don't think anyone is under the illusion that what the campaigns put out is evenly balanced, factual statements," Jackson said. "They're putting out spin and everyone knows they're blowing smoke."
Flop-flip. Thu Sep 30 2004
CBS News - 10 Bush flip-flops. As someone else said while I was reading comments about, a 'flip-flop' or change of opinion is not necessarily a bad thing, and can actually be a good thing. CBS is acting all blogger-like now and holding W's feet to the fire for being such a monumental hypocrite.
Now with a hat. Thu Sep 30 2004
Size Flags NJ building fastest coaster. It's the same scheme as the Dragster one at Cedar Point, but with a hill on the return trip. Videos over here. All stolen from LinkFilter.

I was thinking about this a while ago. Thought is was interesting.
Ugh. Thu Sep 30 2004
Disturbing account of a woman's fight for equality in Pakistan. In June 2002, the police say, members of a high-status tribe sexually abused one of Ms. Mukhtaran's brothers and then covered up their crime by falsely accusing him of having an affair with a high-status woman. The village's tribal council determined that the suitable punishment for the supposed affair was for high-status men to rape one of the boy's sisters, so the council sentenced Ms. Mukhtaran to be gang-raped.
Oh, the good times. Thu Sep 30 2004

Ali G vs. Kazakhstan. While the rest of us marvel at how people don't catch on to the stuff Borat's saying, there are groups taking it seriously. Seriously. Thanks to Jeanine for this one.

The Segway Golf Transporter. This actually seems like a good, albeit pricey, idea. Carries a cooler for holding your swing oil.
Doing my part. Thu Sep 30 2004
I was nervous for Kerry, but he was great tonight. Calm, cool, collected, brought up all the right issues at the right time. Nice job.
