Does this Count as drinking and Driving? Mon Oct 3 2005
From Bordick: Although I appreciate the capabilities, it's only a matter of time until someone remarks on this. Most have heard that the Chevy Nova sells poorly in Spanish-speaking countries because Nova translates as "It does not go." Well, "Pivo" in Croatian (I know, it's obscure) is Beer. So have fun driving the Nissan Beer.
Think before you cut. It hurts. Mon Oct 3 2005

Ronald McDonald goes sexy. In case you even had to guess, it's from Japan. No one claimed credit for this, but it seems like a derek or will original.

From Derek:Underground HipHop Videos Not quite the standard bhendrix fare, but there are some classics from the Beastie Boys, Naughty by Nature, and the Pharcyde. Also there's the video for All Caps by Madvillain and some freestyles from Eyedea I do enjoy me some 'Sabotage' every now and then. -ed

How to increase your gas mileage. Edmunds drove a Mustang and a Land Rover with various methods and charted the improvement in mileage. Turns out the best thing to do is to quit driving like me. That is, accelerating as much as possible and then slamming on the brakes. Inflated tires and cruise control also help.

The Flyak - the hydrofoil Kayak This seems like it would be hard as hell to use, but man is it cool. So what'ya say about putting it on an 8? Can't be that hard, right?
Classic Followup Mon Oct 3 2005
Some follow up on 'Scopes II' going down in Harrisburg Or as I like to call it, fucking morons on parade. And here's the quote of the millennium: "They're babblers," said the pastor, the Rev. Jim Grove, who leads a 40-member independent Baptist church outside of Dover. "The more Ph.D.'s you get, it seems like the further away from God you get."
And the runner up... Mon Oct 3 2005
Opinion piece on Harriet Miers, Bush's supreme court pick. And this is from a conservative. In the White House that hero worshipped the president, Miers was distinguished by the intensity of her zeal: She once told me that the president was the most brilliant man she had ever met. Stolen from Cursor and Think Progress.
The new... uh, company I don't hate. Mon Oct 3 2005
Engadget interviews Shigeru Miyamoto. He invented Mario. And every other good game. Ever. Without exception. Or something like that. I think the difference is that Nintendo, itself, is an entertainment company. And for many years, we’ve been looking for ways to take ideas that can entertain people and turning those ideas into entertainment products. I think we’re very strong in that area and I think we’ll continue to be strong in that area. And I also think that because we’re a company that is selling not only the hardware, but also the software, that we’re putting those two pieces together as a product.
Random Mon Oct 3 2005
Three things real quick: 1. If you share an office with someone (or more specifically, me), please don't eat in the office. I can think of few things as gross as sitting in a silent room listening to someone chew their cud. 2. It seems like it would be a good idea to make fast food bags out of corrugated paper. The air in the corrugation would make a nice insulator. Tom, get on it. 2b. I'd like to get a deodorant brand where the cap sits flush with the holes where the goop comes out. When traveling, things take a beating and I end up with a cap full of deodorant, which is useless. Brown, I'm looking in your direction, even though you make detergent and stuff. But you're people who know people. Or if someone knows of such a dispenser, lemme know. I've tried about 4 different brands. (And yes, this is what my life has come to. On the Mazlow scale, I'm on step 8 - nitpicking details.) 3. I've received some excellent free swag due to my diligence with this here web site. I will debut it this weekend, take some pics, and throw credit where it's due. So you got that goin' for ya'. Which is nice.

Autoweek tests the Bugatti Veyron. No longer do I have to answer "What's the fastest car?" with "The McLaren F1" and get weird looks. Now I can say Bugatti Veyron. 987HP. 2.5s to 62. 7.3s to 125!! That's less time than a Neon's 0-60. $1.2 Million The engine? A turbo W16. 4 seperate turbos. Picture 4 of the high output TT engines mated to the same crankshaft. That's what this is. Sort of.

Who runs Bartertown? Tue Oct 4 2005
From Derek: I saw this late night on Television. Midgets selling real estate. And in case you were too busy watching Desperate Housewives, you missed Dave Attell's Insomniac Tour Special with Dane Cook, Sean Rouse, and the very unfunny Greg Giraldo. The site has a fair amount of clips from the show. Worth checking out, unless you hate comedy.
Putting the faux back in Fox Tue Oct 4 2005
Former Fox reporter says Fox News sucks. "I started having issues when others in the organization would take my carefully scripted and nuanced reporting and pull out bits and pieces to support their agenda on their shows. "Editorially, I had issues with story selection," Shuster went on. "But the bigger issue was that there wasn't a tradition or track record of honoring journalistic integrity. I found some reporters at Fox would cut corners or steal information from other sources or in some cases, just make things up. Management would either look the other way or just wouldn't care to take a closer look. I had serious issues with that." Stolen from Cursor. Update Link fixed.

Conservatives upset about Miers nomination. If you actually care, I'm sure you've heard all of this. I had the opportunity to see a little more of our country, and with the choice of christian rock, country, talk radio, and silence, I went with talk radio. The talk radio show was featuring two southern women complaining about how awful this was and how Bush had betrayed everyone and how they weren't sure he had Jesus in his heart. It was awesome. I almost drove off the road laughing. I still don't think anyone knows what this Miers thinks (and it stinks of cronyism), but man, it's awesome to watch. Thanks W. So when does Kutcher jump in?
Animal Planet Thu Oct 6 2005

I just got some Friendster spam. Someone set up a profile and just started sending messages to visit their girl-on-a-web-cam site. Seriously, what is wrong with people? And who goes to a web site and thinks oooo, a girl with a web cam. I'll pay them money.? Because if there wasn't incentive, they wouldn't do it. Oh well. On a side note, Friendster has added a 'Who looked at my profile' page, so no more anonymous 'browsing'. Which used to seem like the whole point.

From jm, aka the newscientist filter guy: A headline like this can only mean on thing, the 2005 IgNoble Awards have been announced. When nature calls, brooding chinstrap and Adélie penguins are reluctant to leave their nests and expose their eggs to the cold. Instead, they simply point their rear outward, lift their tail, and fire. The departing excreta typically reaches distances of about 40 centimetres.

The top 15 Bush appointment hacks. Number 1 goes to Ms. Miers, who I'm actually starting to feel a little bad for. But No. 2 is pretty excellent. John Pennington - Director, Region Ten, Federal Emergency Management Agency A former state representative who ran a coffee business with his wife in rural Washington, Pennington served as Cowlitz County co-chairman of the Bush campaign in 2000. . . just before he was appointed to his fema post, Pennington received his bachelor’s degree from an unaccredited California correspondence school that federal investigators later described as a “diploma mill.”

Truth or dare with iPod Nano as prize gets way out of hand. Joel sent this to me and let me know that If this doesn't belong on bhendrix, i don't know what does. And he would be right. I'm a little hesitant on the truth to all this, but it's a great story anyway. Be sure to read to the end.
Slave to the beast Tue Oct 11 2005
Google RSS Reader also from Joel. I got to the site, but it's been importing my 50-some feeds via OPML for the past 15 minutes. It also never seems to load the bhendrix feed from feedburner. If you want a direct link to that, it's just http://bhendrix.com/index.xml, but then it still never seems to load. So just to get things straight, it doesn't seem to do anything at the moment and doesn't provide the features or functionality of Newsgator or Bloglines or any other site that can easily digest and organize a rigidly formatted text file. Dear Google, Please clean up the giant dump you just took on my browser. Thanks, Brian.

White House Press Secretary Says Reporter Opposes 'War on Terrorism' This was in response to a comment about one of his BS answers. I can't believe he didn't just ask why she hates America. Clearly she hates America and wants everyone to die. Everyone that's a real American. Can we just replace everyone in the Bush administration with real clowns instead of these semi-clowns or ass-clowns as the case may be? That would be a lot more entertaining and probably not as detrimental to the nation on the whole. Plus it would make all those people who say they're afraid of clowns freak out. And that would be neat.

From Bob: A preview of the Colbert Report Reading this arcticle, I cannot tell where Colbert has stopped being quoted and where the 'journalist' picks back up with thier own mockings of the right-wing media. Penny Arcade donates $10K to call out a douche bag. So if you're a nerd, you've probably been following this, but a guy named Jack Thompson has been on a crusade against video games for a while. He recently stepped up his rhetoric and said he would donate $10k to charity if someone created a game based on "A father’s vengeance on the game industry after his son is killed by a gamer." Well someone did (a mod for Grand Theft Auto San Andreas) and now he says it was satire. The guys at Penny Arcade, as yet another way to piss this guy off, just donated the $10,000 to charity in Jack Thompson's name.

Time's 100 best books since 1923 A lot of really good ones made the list - Gatsby, Eyes are Watching God, Slaughterhouse-Five, etc. The omission of Atlas Shrugged and the inclusion of On the Road are both irritating. MTV's retrospect on the NES From boot. It turns 20 next week. What the NES launch in America had on the one hand in Japan was an immediate introduction of what would be the era's most influential game — "Super Mario Bros." Launched in Japan in September 1985, the game quickly followed for American release. In Japan, in fact, the game was intended to be the last hurrah for the Famicom. Miyamoto said his team of designers was preparing to work on games for a new disk-based system and close the cartridge-based Famicom with a bang.

Reporter works a month at near minimum wage. It's not pretty. I kept a job and a roof over my head and my belly mostly full - a life of minimalist survival. I couldn't have supported a child or taken a vacation, a day off or a sick day. To do better, I'd need to do what so many, like Julio, do: work a second job. An illness or work slowdown could have plunged me into homelessness.

This is from Joiner: I found this discount on ben’s bargains for visiondirect.com. It is the best deal you will find on contact lenses, but you can get other things too. I put in all the discount codes listed and ended up ordering $300 worth of things for $100. No idea how long this deal will last, but I figured saving everyone 70% on contacts = good indeed -ed.

Bordick asks: I probably shouldn't do this because every one will start blathering their opinion but. . . I will be getting back into snowboarding after being out for a few years. Since boarding in Corpus Christi, TX was hard, I stopped following it. Who is making good boards? Are there still primarily two types of boots (soft and clip-in)? What size should I be looking for? When can my yard rats start with me? I'm sure this is a big mistake. Boards: Burton, Rome or Palmer - Possibly Lib Tech or GNU Bindings: Burton or possibly Technine Boots: Burton, 32, DC - whatever fits the best. Clip-ins are pretty much dead. I think there's only a couple models still made and this is probably the last year for those. I think some of the ski makers make decent boards (K2, Salomon), but I choose not to buy from them so I can't tell you much about them. Length is based on weight and what kind of riding you want to do. I've ridden a 155, 156.5, and 160 and they've all been okay. Guessing at your weight from the last time I saw you, you probably can't go wrong in the high 150s. You'll get a good balance of stability at speed and quick turning. Anything less than like 155 is probably too short and anything much over 162ish will feel like a barn door. If you're not going to be going mach 8, closer to 155 is probably better. As for kids, you may as well ask me if breast feeding is better than formula. The smallest board Burton makes is for a 35-45lb kid. So that's like, what, 9? In all honesty I have heard it's easier for 3-4 year olds to ski but after that they can ride. -ed.

Score Fri Oct 21 2005
Dispute over $241,000 Scores bill Which brings me to my next point: I need to open a Scores franchise. Or become a stripper. Probably the former. Someone submitted this but didn't claim it. After a lawsuit last year, Hanover said that "high rollers" visiting Scores' "super elite Presidents' Club" spend thousands of dollars on single bottles of champagne and tip strippers as much as $10,000 for lap dances and for spending time with them. Hanover said that each time a patron spends $10,000, Scores calls the customer's credit card company to get the charges approved. Scores even fingerprints the customer and requires him to get on the telephone with a credit card representative, he said.

CBS Poll: 51 percent of Americans say God created humans in their present form. Of course, it's plus/minus 4 points, so it could be as low as 47%. There is one ray of hope: Still, most Americans think it is possible to believe in both God and evolution. Sixty-seven percent say this is possible, while 29 percent disagree. Most demographic groups say it is possible to believe in both God and evolution, but just over half of white evangelical Christians say it is not possible.

Do Hybrids Save Money? No. This one's from Brick, who says Not a surprise... Maybe if you buy a used one you'd have a better shot at saving gas $? In all fairness he compared a Prius with a bottom of the line Civic, which is a pretty apple/orange comparison, as the Prius is well equipped standard. I can't find the numbers, but a hybrid Civic and a regular Civic are apparently about $2000 apart when comparably equipped. There's a lot of interesting points in the comments at Autoblog. -ed.

Bank of America will help you save by rounding up. The matching seems nice, I guess. Is the whole point to get you to use your card at more places? i.e. not pay with cash? A general question to the TV owning masses Wed Oct 26 2005
From mayes, who says he's new to this buying and owning thing: OK. So I'm finally going to buy a tv. I've decided on a 23-26 inch flat screen. Flat screen CRT or flat screen flat panel (LCD)? -ed My question concerns HD monitor vs built in tuners. What exactly is the deal here? Specifically (Rob brought this up), does either choice have anything to do with the new blu-ray stuff (i.e. will I need to get a fancier blu ray dvd player to play on my tv, etc)? I think oof, nino, and a host of others can speak to this better than I can, but here's my $.02 and a grain of salt - o: I've understood that for pretty much anything under 27" HD doesn't really matter. That said, I've heard the new HD-DVD/Blu-Ray stuff will require an HDMI input to run at uber-high resolutions but will run at lower resolutions using other inputs. I have no idea about the integrated/non-integrated tuners and how that works with cable/dish, etc. Wow. That's worth like $.01. Sorry. -ed

W says Miers withdrew because the Senate wanted too much information. I am not making this up. I understand and share her concern, however, about the current state of the Supreme Court confirmation process. It is clear that Senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House -- disclosures that would undermine a President's ability to receive candid counsel.

A Supreme with a nickname? It's a mad world. Mon Oct 31 2005
Scalito - the newest Supreme Court nominee As the Democrats don't have the votes to get rid of him, he'll be in there in a couple months and abortion will be all kinds of difficult to get. Guess it'll help with the next edition of Freakanomics in about 18 years. The rest of his decisions seem okay to me. Among his noteworthy opinions was his lone dissent in the 1991 case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey, in which the 3rd Circuit struck down a Pennsylvania law that included a provision requiring women seeking abortions to notify their spouses.
It's really a mad world. Mon Oct 31 2005

Uninformed conservatives groups want to limit use of a vaccine that can prevent cervical cancer. It might get in the way of the 'abstinence message'. Determining what these people should shove and where is left as an exercise for the reader. The vaccine protects women against strains of a ubiquitous germ called the human papilloma virus. Although many strains of the virus are innocuous, some can cause cancerous lesions on the cervix (the outer end of the uterus), making them the primary cause of this cancer in the United States. Cervical cancer strikes more than 10,000 U.S. women each year, killing more than 3,700. The vaccine appears to be virtually 100 percent effective against two of the most common cancer-causing HPV strains. Merck, whose vaccine is further along, plans to ask the Food and Drug Administration by the end of the year for approval to sell the shots.
