The Poll results give me hope Mon Nov 2 2009

Southwest apologizes for tossing a 2-year-old and his mom off the plane. They got the boot before the plane even took off. I fail to see why they apologized. An unruly passenger is an unruly passenger. -hendred the unsympathetic via pa hendred

Bitch fight! Tue Nov 3 2009

The Pee Drinker vs. Krugman I don't think I've read anything from Krugman in a while and I really don't care who's right, but Mankiw riled up is something I might even pay to read. -hendred, sitting quietly with his bread at the circus

Ah yes, good ol' post 9126 Tue Nov 3 2009

Remember the doctor that stopped short in front of the cyclists? Guilty. Up to five years in the clink. Six felony convictions and one misdemeanor. He'll most likely lose his license to practice? Got this off the Goat.

Previously and previously. -hendred

Quick update I changed the link to a newer story with more info.

Spread the Word! Tue Nov 3 2009

Probably no regular readers are planning to attend the Skins-Broncos game on Nov 15, but this plan is pretty awesome and I hope it works out. The plan is in response to banning signs and dissenting t-shirts at FedEx Field, and to Dan Snyder sucking balls generally. -decker

Laughing. Crying. Tue Nov 3 2009

Minneapolis mayor's race has some awesome candidates. 2nd from the bottom. Then third from the bottom is one of these guys:

The Edgertonite National Party exists to secure political independence for the people of the Midwestern United States and a homeland for the Lauraist religion. We use the term “Nation of Edgerton” to describe the area within a 240-mile radius of Minneapolis, Minnesota. We are a non-traditional Communist party, based on the ideology of Lauraism: the belief that Laura Ingalls Wilder is God, Communism (public ownership of business) is the best form of government, age of consent laws should be repealed, public transit should be returned to the routes, fares, and schedules of 18 September 1970, the Nation of Edgerton should secede from the United States as a Lauraist homeland, and all people, including children, deserve as much personal liberty as possible consistent with public safety and the rights of others. Capitalism is a per se violation of people’s rights by exploitation. -hendred

Weezer, The New SNL Wed Nov 4 2009

If you're young, you love them. If you're old, you remember how awesome they used to be and how much they suck now. And if you love Kenny G, now there's this.

I actually don't mind this one. Rivers seems to just want to go for Top 40 Sound by which I mean every particular sound on the top 40. Just check out the videos right below, one with Chamillionaire and one with the non-union Feist equivalent. -jm

For further reading on songs with a sax that don't suck (with the obvious exception of the Huey Lewis oeuvre).

Wow Wed Nov 4 2009

Is this just insane or is it me?

From ryan, who's glad he's not worth that much

Maine may represent sometime. Just not today. Wed Nov 4 2009

Bill in Portland Maine from Daily Kos sums up the loss on the gay marriage vote.

Standard Daily Kos warning: Site is the ultra-left home of the dirty hippies, godless America-hating communists, father rapers, and litterbugs.

There's a map over at the Bangor Daily news on the right hand side of the page with the breakdown by county. Portland is in CU (Cumberland county). No means you support gay marriage.

How many useful iphone apps do you have? Wed Nov 4 2009

Apparently there's 100,000 apps in the itunes store now. I guess a lot of them are junk/dupes. I'm defining useful as used more than once or twice - not just played around with it. As always, the scale may be way off.

D.I.Y. Chewbacca Noise Thu Nov 5 2009

From miolla under "Science." (see brian?!? -jm)

I'm a Jellyfish Thu Nov 5 2009

Radioflyer Pumpkin Carving Contest on WGN. It's second to only this as the best thing I've seen on that network. -jm

Preach on brutha, preach on Sat Nov 7 2009

Stolen from gizmodo. I really dug Helvetica, especially after realizing my next-door neighbor is in it. Objectified is in the queue. Here's Caldeira's take. Ive could probably pass for a lowly *gasp* engineer. Keep that on the DL. -hendred, slowly working through his recordings of How It's Made

Return of Bruno rules Sat Nov 7 2009

Hipster Olympics From not a hipster... or a Prommel

Couple chuckles but seems really long -hendred

And here I thought it was all just pedophilia and coverups Mon Nov 9 2009

Two catholic priests are feuding over Ted Kennedy's right to a Catholic funeral. Because really, what they need to be doing is fighting over this kind of bullshit until all their parishoners die off. I'm glad they can agree on hating on The Gays, though. -hendred

DTS pet project update Mon Nov 9 2009

Laser-powered climbing robot wins NASA space elevator challenge. Part of the challenge, anyway. Filed under "Tech" just 'cause. -hendred

Zeus wrecks. Again.

Dear Dumbasses,

Quit being dumbasses. And don't make me send Ryan out there some morning. No one wants that.

-hendred

Thanks to ab for the heads up.

A Don Draper halloween costume would be impressive Mon Nov 9 2009

If you haven't been watching Made Men, I feel bad for you.

!! SPOILER ALERT !!

Can someone explain why Betty is marrying the other dude? They've seen each other something like 5 times? Is that right? Am I missing something?

The thought of seeing Don Draper single during next season already has me chuckling. Talk about boy band ass. -hendred

One Zeus license plate, coming up Mon Nov 9 2009

The new Ducati 848 Dark. In this case Dark means "awesome" as well as matte black. -hendred the wallpaper changer

I saw him wreck a ten million dollar mast because he liked the splash Mon Nov 9 2009

BMW Oracle's trimaran broke its giant carbon fiber mast.

Have no fear, they had a spare and pretty soon they'll be replacing it with the world's largest wing.

The official blog has some more pics, info, and video. I am in awe. -hendred

If you've got a bunch of minutes Tue Nov 10 2009

The Mayor wants to tax tuition. As if being in Pittsburgh wasn't disincentive enough. -jm

The Worst White Man Government Conspiracy Since Crack Tue Nov 10 2009

Q: Why would a family earning $18K/year want to earn $39K/year?

A: They wouldn't.

It's from a pretty libertarian blog (link from MR), but if you can get past lines like, "there is nobody to blame but the electorate. Especially the left-liberal do-gooders" there are some good points. Although I think he ignores the value people put on choice: not all government hand outs give total freedom of choice for how to spend the subsidies, like health insurance programs; in other words, the poor may not value the subsidies as highly as their costs.

And here's a breakdown of unemployment among different groups. Check out black men without a high school diploma ages 15-24, and compare that to, say, white women college graduates ages 25-44. Yowser. Link also from MR.

...not that I think that subsidies are the main cause of high unemployment right now, but they are a couple of interesting links. -decker

Are you not amused? Wed Nov 11 2009

A double shot from the WSJ.

Getting rid of the football helmet?

A little more information about hoarders. If you haven't seen the A&E show, it's worth a watch. If nothing else you'll find yourself spontaneously cleaning after watching. I can't even begin to comprehend what's going on in someone's mind when they live with food rotting in their living room. -hendred

Quick Update This week's Amazon comment digest has some good ones.

From back in the day Fri Nov 13 2009

Remember the Kelo decision? It's the one where the Supreme Court ruled eminent domain covered taking land for "economic reasons". It hasn't really panned out.

Original coverage. From Bub with comments by Jeanine. Wow.

Halloween is always a good time Mon Nov 16 2009

How to make a tauntaun costume. This is getting around the interwebs pretty quick. I stole it from Gizmodo.

There's a video on page four and a Q&A. I can see the appeal of making this stuff. Drunk people loves them a good costume. -hendred

This makes me hungry...not. Mon Nov 16 2009

Half deep fried live fish. As a hardcore meat eater even I get a little squeamish watching this. From Rollins.

Good God I've watched a lot of TV Mon Nov 16 2009

Top 30 series that were on in the '00s. Or Stuff to put in your Netflix queue.

The Judd Apatow series are good but a bit overrated

The Wire really is incredible

The British Office just sort of annoyed me for some reason. I only watched two episodes.

The Sopranos should have stopped after about 4 seasons.

Curb is beyond annoying

Rome was pretty damn good but not on this list.

Battlestar really lost it in the last season or so

Firefly really did deserve more episodes

Oh man do I love Dexter. I always feel weird about that. -hendred

All lists, all the time Tue Nov 17 2009

The 50 top-grossing movies of the decade. It's amazing how many truly shitty movies are on the list. -hendred

So it's not just the Holy Shit factor? Wed Nov 18 2009

How to judge the halfpipe contest in the Olympics. I'm guessing the top 5 runs will all elicit "Are you fucking kidding me?" responses from spectators, especially when viewed next to the runs from 2002 and even 2006. -hendred

Didn't see that one coming... Wed Nov 18 2009

Jenson Button goes to McClaren. I guess you gotta cash in while you're hot, but some loyalty woulda been nice. Burch sent this in*. -hendred

I'd be surprised if Oof didn't know this already Thu Nov 19 2009

From Bean: 2010 World Cup qualifiers

All or most of the usual suspects. The Frogs apparently got in on an uncalled handball against the Micks. I find it interesting that Australia is in the 'Asia' qualifying group, and I find it even more interesting that the New Zealand team is called the All Whites. Aaaand that's enough ethnic jokes for even me.

Maine represent Thu Nov 19 2009

Senators draw their states and label whem with important points. Check out Maine by Collins and MN by Franken for the highlights and Georgia by Saxby for the lowlights. It'd be cool if more of the Senators did it. -hendred

They may actually be on to something. Fri Nov 20 2009

Driving the Volt after its battery discharges. There seems to be an awful lot of knob-gobbling in the article, but it seems like the car's gonna be a competitor. -hendred

Call me Julia Roberts, 'cause I love my life Sat Nov 21 2009

Form Bean: Onion is awesome again, for the gajillionth time

Am I missing something? Sat Nov 21 2009

From ryan: I realize I'm not the most pc guy on this site, so I submit this to you for your thoughts.

This is now worthy of a suspension??? If I understand the pronounciation piece, isn't that the way our past president said it? Is there really something racist about this?

Update Here's some video.

Global Warming, Eh? Sat Nov 21 2009

Hard to say if these hacked emails are real, but interesting (and embarrassing) if true. -decker

Heads up, nerds Mon Nov 23 2009

From Rollins: I'm making and selling these christmas ornaments. I know there's some in the DTS crowd that would be into this sort of thing. I need all orders in by friday if you or anyone you know may be interested.

These are the coolest ornaments I have ever seen (although I personally don't have a tree). Filed under "Art" because there is no "Design". -decker
