Shaq puts LA home up for sale.
Shaunie O'Neal was quoted while giving a tour of the family's 18-bedroom Los Angeles mansion, which she says the family has outgrown and which is now on the market for $7.5 million.
Selling the mansion, Shaunie O'Neal said, was the family's intention whether Shaq remained with the Lakers or not. The timing of Shaq's demand for a trade has increased the focus on the transaction.
Thanks to brother Bharath for the link and highlight. Perhaps the O'Neals should read this.

Talk amongst yer selves. And if you come up with a new poll topic, that would be cool too. Oh, and I was wrong, apparently Spider-Man 2 is the bee's knees. Go consume. And don't blow your hand off.

Why we need the draft back, according to a Nixon speech writer. But the nation also needs a draft because it is one proven mechanism to bring unity to our rapidly separating parts. It needs a draft to provide that common civic grammar that encompasses those who have served and their families and friends. It needs a draft to honor, and to even out, the sacrifices we call upon our young to make for our nation. Good idea, man. Let's bring society together by killing a bunch of our young people.
No really, hang up. Thu Jul 1 2004
CNET editor says he can drive, talk, e-mail and eat just fine, thanks. As I sit here in an airport wanting to track down everyone responsible for making cell phones a reality, I'm calling bullshit on this assclown and his studies. I'd challenge him to go out on a bicycle sometime. I'm not even talking in traffic. I'm talking somewhere *near* cars. You'll start fearing for your life within 5 minutes, much less actually being in traffic with a Soccer mom in her excursion with the 19 spawn in the back. I gaurantee you, whatever you're talking about in the car can wait. It did 5 years ago. And while I'm at it, no one in the airport wants to hear how important you are, even if you were denied your upgrade. I think I'm gonna make a shirt - Hang Up and Shut Up. Ah well.
New Poll- Military Service Sat Jul 3 2004
Should the US have mandatory military service? I'm talking military here - toting guns and going to war, not celaning up our neighborhoods or joining Americorps. No exemptions, no exceptions, everyone serves.
M507 Sat Jul 3 2004
New M5 details. 507 HP V10 @ 7750 RPM. Who says F1 tech doesn't trickle down? Pneumatic valves in 2012? For those keeping track at home, this has more power than a Viper, although it's down 117 lb-ft. It's all almost enough to make the car attractive.
Tour Tech Sat Jul 3 2004
A little glimpse at Tour Tech. Just to wet the appetite.

56 deceits in F 9/11. Some of these are classified as deceits and actually are, but some of them are just obvious to anyone with a pulse and should be taken off the list for the simple reason of bringing the rest of it down. e.g. - the Britney Spears one. Ones like the school incident are matters of opinion, and in this case, the opinion of the school principal vs. the viewers. Again, just take it off the list.
It begins... Sun Jul 4 2004
Lance takes second in 3.8 mile prologue. Ullrich and Hamilton are back a bit, but it's a long race. Hamilton's time trial ride. Unbelievable bike. And in case you were wondering what kinds of wheels some of them are rocking (although not Armstrong on this stage), check this out. 16 seconds over 40k. The full-on real-deal wrap-up with great pics.
The whole cake. Sun Jul 4 2004
Moore says downloads of F 9/11 okay. The distributor is not so happy. So he apparently cracked the whole no distributor thing, at least for people with huge connections.

10 year followup on 'Hoop Dreams' stars. Interesting to see what they're doing now and how their lives have changed. Also in this vein is 'The Last Shot' by Darcy Frey, a good, quick read about basketball in Coney Island. Cameo by Stephon Marbury included.
Back in ... Yellow Wed Jul 7 2004
Lance back in Yellow. His team kicked the living crap out of everyone in the Team Time Trial today. Hamilton is in 8th 36 seconds back. USPS averaged 32 mph over a 40 mile course. UPDATE This link has been updated with a much bigger story and lots of great pics. -> The full results. The times on the right in this one are in minutes.seconds. Be afraid.

Tell the Senate that gay marriage should not be Constitutionally banned. It's up for debate currently and the vote could be as soon as tomorrow (Wednesday). Sign the petition, call your senators, do something. If anybody has any suggestions for getting a Linksys wireless access point to work, please let me know. I've got a cable modem. Cable modem works when plugged into computer. Computer can see and attach to the access point. But the router doesn't seem to pick up an IP address from the cable modem. It shows all 0's on the config screen. So any ideas are welcome. I've rebooted everything many, many times, so I think I've exhausted that route.

Recruits for National Felons' League starting early. “Williams' lawyers said it was important to the school that the player will not have a felony conviction, and the judge agreed.” “Williams admitted violating probation imposed for a Pembroke Pines stereo shop burglary in 2002 by getting arrested during a recruiting visit to the University of Florida in January.” “He was placed on probation for a year last week in Gainesville after pleading no contest to a felony count of setting off hotel fire extinguishers and misdemeanor battery for hugging a woman without her permission.” Bharath says to keep in mind that this kid will be a millionaire in a few years. Thanks to him for the link and quotes.

California education chief calls preschooler 'stupid dirty girl' I think the best part is that the guy apologized, the mom is cool with it, and the little girl seems fine too. Just the NAACP and others are keeping it going. Oh well. Arjen says he let the pet name of the 6 year old from the night before slip accidently. I would point out that he's not a Catholic priest. Thanks to Arjen for the link.
Not that way... Tue Jul 13 2004
Eugene posted this cool link to a really expensive car. That reminded me of the similar looking (but not related) LeMans car that flipped. This being the net, there's a video. It's over here. Scroll to the bottom where it says 'Backflip videos: Porsche GT198 & Mercedes CLR '. The Mercedes guy was okay, but not sure about the Porsche. There's a good explanation of the Merc flip over here.

Bush campaign pissed about celebrity fund raiser remarks by Kerry and guests. Here's a note to both sides: NO ONE CARES. Get over yourselves. If you had used the news cycle to actually promote your views on actual, real issues that affect actual, real people, it would have been appreciated. And of course, I've got to give it up to the media for reporting on this, instead of things that actually matter.
Hang 'em high. Wed Jul 14 2004
Man isn't charged after he assaults the man who raped him and left him for dead... after they were placed in the same jail cell. If that's not karma, I don't know what is. I would've let him castrate the guy, then make him eat his balls, then light him on fire, and then kill him. 6 years out of a 17 year sentence? And we have people in jail for drugs? Right. Good choice, parol board.

Tour Update Thu Jul 15 2004
Quiet day on the Tour. No change in the overall classifications. Armstrong is still at 9:35 back. Hamilton at 10:18. Tons of others right in there. The race is in the mountains, and they are coming. And hell's following with them. Here's the full run-down for today. The break group of 3 was up almost 8 minutes today. Yesterday's stage was pretty cool simply because a Frenchman took it home in style (Virinque) on Bastille Day, and a Frenchman has the yellow as well.
Good News! Thu Jul 15 2004
Everyone here at bhendrix.com would like to throw a big congratulations over to (Red) Tom Scanlon for hanging around while his wife brought their daughter Kate Elizabeth into the world on July 9th. In case you missed out on some of this stuff, the vote in the Senate died for now. 48 votes in favor. Ditka is not running for office, dashing the hopes and dreams of millions of comics (and SNL writers). Whoopi got shit-canned by Slim Fast as their spokesperson for her 'hate-fest' comments. I'm still not sure how the logic works for this - someone going to buy a diet drink thinks, "I better not buy Slim Fast because Whoopi called Bush a vagina or bush or whatever"? Who thinks like that? Oh well. It's their company. They can do what they want.

Told ya'. Mon Jul 19 2004
Sandy Bullock is dating Jesse James. Yes, that one. This is just wedding gossip, but anyway, it's just so weird I had to post it. Miss Congeniality star Sandra Bullock and her beau Jesse James have sparked speculation they're planning to wed, after they were spotted shopping for diamond rings. Eyewitnesses say the love birds were seen at the Neil Lane store in Los Angeles on June 26, lingering over "a very large cushion cut" diamond engagement ring. Both stars' representatives insist the two were at the diamond store shopping for "gifts". But pals tell America's Star magazine that as soon as James' divorce to porn star Janine Lindemulder is finalized the pair will wed. The marriage would mark the third trip down the aisle for TV tough guy James, while it would be the first for Bullock, who in the past has been romantically linked to Tate Donovan, Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Gosling.

The ESPY award winners. Lance took home Best Male athlete. Ryan Nyquist took best Action Sports athlete for being eXtreme. I'm a little curious as to how they even came up with the nominees for that second one. Not nominating Danny Way (and having him win) is a travesty. The guy isn't human. Apparently ESPN only considers the Action Sports world that happens within the friendly confines of their network.

Bush and Co. hold up $34 million in international family planning aid. They're saying China is coercing families into having abortions, but the evidence seems to indicate otherwise. Good plan. In related, abstinence-only education, the textbooks are toilet paper. Good plan guys. Tell a bunch of high school kids not to have sex. That'll get rid of those pregnant teens and the STDs. I wish Larry Flynt would put up another $1million bounty for all the ass that W tapped before he was married.

Live Coverage of the Tour. If you didn't catch last Friday and Saturday's stages, they were amazing. Armstrong is the man to beat, but as of this morning, he's ~20 seconds back of Voekler, who is a Sorkin-like character at this point (Stackhouse or something.) There's are really good wrapups at Cycling News and at OLN. Thanks to JT for the kick in the butt. UPDATE Armstrong took the stage win over Basso after reeling in a breakaway, which included Ullrich. He's now in the Yellow 1'25" ahead of Basso. It's on.

New York, Florida, California, and Texas form a lobbying group. They're complaining about their lack of federal aid/assistance, which I could see in Florida and Texas, which rank 47th and 44th respectively in per capita aid, but New York is 3rd, and California is 27th, only a couple dollars per person below the national average. This is post-9/11 data (2002), but even in 2000, NY was 5th in per capita aid. The 2002 stats. Thanks to Sperl for the link.

Live coverage of the Tour in text form. These guys may be drinking (heavily) today, because they keep making all these jokes. It would be like Art commenting on buggy. Anyway, Lance starts at 10:58 EST, and should finish in under 40 minutes, so the whole thing should be totally wrapped up by 11:40 EST. UPDATE Lance Takes it home 1'01" ahead of Ullrich, who was second. He crushed Basso (who started 2 minutes ahead and Armstrong passed) by 2'23" on Stage that took 39'41". Best entry of the day: 17:36 CEST Armstrong leaves Basso in his wake as he comes in to the last kilometre, taking heed of the "Rip their balls off Lance" signs painted on the road.

4 word movie reviews. Link goes to the top 100 page. Some of these are pretty clever.
Know Your Rights Fri Jul 23 2004
Bill in Congress to make anything illegal that "intentionally induces" a person to infringe copyright. So, for example, if it was decided the iPod fell into this category, it would be illegal. Or your TiVO. I wish all these guys would sit down with their grandkids and figure out how people are currently listening to music, and how most people aren't out to be criminals. From Slashdot. Head over there for the full rundown.
Seuth Sayer Sun Jul 25 2004
Interview with a demo guy. He talks a fair bit about 9/11 but about the art of destroying buildings. Pretty interesting stuff.
Go toward the light. Sun Jul 25 2004
LEDS may replace lightbulbs in the near future. RPI prof figured out how to focus them to produce less heat and more light.
He's back. Take that Kamen. Sun Jul 25 2004
One wheeled Segway. It's called the Eunicycle. It's built by the same guy that threw down the home-built Segway last year.

Learnin's for suckers. Mon Jul 26 2004
State of the GED. The article is sort of interesting, but the stat that caught my eye was the statewide percentage of people who don't have high school diplomas. Over 25% in Mississippi, Kentucky, and Louisianna. That's one in 4. What is going on?
I got a chubbie. Mon Jul 26 2004
Hefty Beauty Wins Miss Chubby Contest From Bean-O, who only sent it once.
All aboard! Mon Jul 26 2004
Fake AK-47s making Russians unhappy. I'll let Sam take it from here, as I fell off his train of thought. At my first glance, it looks like exactly the same arguement that the record companies, Hollywood, and software companies are making.
Except, in this case, it's the US government encouraging the infringing. I will also feel less bad (if that is possible) about people that download music while record companies do not provide semi cheap competative alternatives such as a pay per song library, a lower cost DVD (perhaps without millions of extras), and Extremely Lite Photoshop for $5.
Way to go defense department. I think DVDs are a pretty good deal at this point -ed
Tangled web they weave. Mon Jul 26 2004

Talk Amongst Yourselves Tue Jul 27 2004
How is it that you can be really good at doing something you absolutely hate, yet completely suck at something you love? How does that come to pass?

The Friendly Skies Wed Jul 28 2004
Soccer Mom overreacted to 'terrorists'. This is a follow up from the story about the woman who saw lots of Middle Eastern men on her flight doing things like opening and closing overhead bins and going to the bathroom.
Bahstan Hi-jinks. Wed Jul 28 2004
Gillette razors given to Dem. Convention attendees. Taken by security. Never can be too careful with those things. If you were to take 5 or 6 apart, weld them together (TiG or MiG, not sure which), you could probably hurt someone. Thanks to Jef for this one, who assures me the phrase 'T Bag Search' was on the front of Boston.com yesterday.
Anything but games without frontiers Wed Jul 28 2004
Doctors Without Borders is pulling out of Afghanistan. They have two main concerns: 1. Unsatisfied with investigation into the killing of their people 2. "co-optation of humanitarian aid" by the U.S. military, a reference to concerns that American forces blur the boundary between military and humanitarian work. So that's not a happy start to a Wednesday.
Every vote ... sorta counts Wed Jul 28 2004
Florida Voting results wiped out They were from a past election, but what if this kind of stuff is happening on election day? This election is going to be a complete mess. Good thing it will be so close.
With a bow. Wed Jul 28 2004
Warp-up of last night at the Democratic Convention. I've been watching this stuff this week, and it's been pretty good. I really enjoyed Clinton's speech as well as Obama's speech. For more info about Obama, head Over here. Thanks to Shek for the links and the motivation.

New Streets album out. Short profile piece from CNN.
Bang for Buck Wed Jul 28 2004
The New Vette. This thing is nuts. It can keep up with a Viper and a 911 and goes for $45,000. Who else is there? The M3? Don't even think about mentioning a rally car of some sort. Wow.
Ridin' the donkey. Thu Jul 29 2004
Here's the DNC wrap-up from Shek: I was particularly fond of Sharpton, I thought it was a great speech even though it ran over. Sharpton's Speech and of course, Here's Edwards' Thanks Shek. I thought Sharpton was hillarious. The donkey/mule thing was great, along with the 'Read my lips' line.
That other Tour Thu Jul 29 2004
I finished with my Percentage Tour (as of last Sunday) and I ended up at 10.5%, or about 210 miles. It's not nearly what I had hoped for, but then again, I could only ride from 6:30-9:00, I didn't go out if it was already raining, and I couldn't ride Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. When I was able to go out, I rode the 20% figure for that day, and usually a little more to catch up. I learned a few things, so here they are (in no particular order):
- Everyone that finishes the real Tour is inhuman. The distances they ride day in and day out at the pace they keep is unbelievable. My hat is off to them.
- It would be helpful to have Floyd Landis, George H., or Eki to tow me up some of the steep hills.
- Road bikes are much better over long distances than mountain bikes with knobbies. But you make due with what ya' got.
- Everyone on a bike or running is really nice to you, especially in Maine.
- People in cars should be treated like they are all blind morons. Then you'll *almost* get hit instead of actually getting hit.
- Anyone over age 50 driving a Buick or Cadillac needs to have their drivers' test every year. No exceptions.
- Bike computers with an altimeter, a heart rate monitor, and cadence features are fun to play with. Bonus points if you can download the stats to your computer.
- When you're reading said bike computer using the light from lightning, it may be time to go in.
- Getting the song 'Landslide' stuck in your head will drive you insane after approx. 18 miles. Divide by 3 for the Dixie Chicks version. Multiply by 1.5 for Smashing Pumpkins.
- The difference between 26 miles and 32 miles is mental.
- Bugs in your mouth suck. Bugs in your eyes suck more.
- You're never really as lost as you think. Just keep going. It'll make sense eventually.
- Rabbits and squirrels will always get out the way. Geese and children will not.
- Lance Armstrong doesn't know anything about data warehousing, and he didn't design 10% of a data warehouse this month. (Assumed)
