Next they will file charges against Mayes for making a Prince mix tape in the 80sSun Jan 6 2008
The RIAA has now accused a man of making "unauthorized copies" of purchased CDs to his computer. Of course, he was also sharing some music, which is what grabbed their attention to begin with. -decker
This means that the RIAA is saying it could actually come after anyone who has ever used a CD ripping program to transfer tracks from a disc to a computer, regardless of whether or not file sharing was involved.
This is an environment of welcoming, and you should just get the hell outta here. Mon Jan 7 2008
Bill Gate's Last Day - from Microsoft's CES presentation. He got Mathew McConaughey to put on a shirt, which is a miracle of Jesus-esque proportions. Both derek and miolla sent this along. Derek did the write-up.
From Team Helicopters: Here's this month's blatent self-promo: we posted a demo of one of the new songs from our upcoming album. (Due out next month) It's called "Getting Out of Town" and can be previewed on www.myspace.com/helicopters. It's just a demo and still needs to be mixed and mastered, but I'll be curious to see whatcha think of it.

Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman has apologized after saying during Friday's telecast of the PGA Tour's opening event that today's young players should lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley. - JT
That quote can be found here in reference to a study that shows that violent films actually reduces the amount of violent crime. This is because would-be violent criminals are in alcohol-less movie theaters instead of getting liquored up. The study also shows that violent crime isn't just postponed. However, it does not refute the idea that the long-term effects of viewing violent movies is more violent behavior. The quote above was suggested as an alternative to violent movies in attracting the demographic that commits crimes. This is a related column by Steven Landsburg. -decker
This happened at my high school alma mater. I love it when they include a picture of the teacher with these stories. I hate it when that picture does nothing for me.
From miolla: A 150" plasma TV. This seems appropriate next to the 550HP CTS. When I first saw this story, all I could think about is the theme song from Team America but like this: "Toe-KEE-yo... FUCK YEAH!"
Apparently two dudes where running around with a dead guy trying to cash his Social Security check. They didn't even have the wherewithal to get an actual wheel chair. They pushed him in an office chair. That's Hells Kitchen NYC for you. All from miolla.
Rollins. You see any of this shenanigans? Fri Jan 11 2008
TV-B-Gone is a remote that runs through the power up/down IR cycle for most North American TVs. Gizmodo had a field day at CES turning off the TVs during the presentations. The hilarity follows.
In a bizarre bit of DTS submissions, Rollins did submit this with the title "I wish I had thought of this". -hendrix
I'm looking to move my DVD collection (about 40 discs) onto a media server of some sort. I don't really want the noise, space, heat issues, and power consumption of a full-on computer running in my living room with MythTV or the like, so I was looking into some of the "Slap a hard drive in/TV out" units.
Does anyone have any experience with these types of things with regards to Video output quality/lack of? Or know of any other similar products worth looking at? Or have alternative suggestions for doing this?
Quick Update I was browsing through the AVSForums last night and found some info and a little more this morning. Really interested if anyone's doing anything different than these guys. Thanks.
Bar offers frequent drinker program. Complete with website to check your progress and disclaimer stating that it somehow doesn't promote more drinking. If you check out the bar's website, they have 'beer and cheese' nights, along with an ongoing fiction series.
...there's a better ethanol source than corn: grass.
...switchgrass ethanol delivers 540 percent of the energy used to produce it, compared with just roughly 25 percent more energy returned by corn-based ethanol according to the most optimistic studies.

"This is an energy crop that can be grown on marginal land," Vogel argues, such as the more than 35 million acres (14.2 million hectares) of marginal land that farmers are currently paid not to plant under the terms of USDA's Conservation Reserve Program. -decker
And in even more unrelated news, when I'm using Firefox and I click on "Add a Comment" for a story on the front page, it simply opens up another tab of DTS. Anyone else having problems?
All ryan: At first I read this and thought it was a good thing I learned now that you aren't allowed to do this. But then I remembered my kid is cooler than this kid and I won't have to force him to wear the black and gold.
Surprisingly, Nino was not an experimental subjectThu Jan 17 2008
College football causes violence. According to a new paper. Actually, what's really surprising is that the blog's author accepts that prohibiting alcohol in stadiums means that fans aren't drunk. I think this is why academic economists are often seen as disconnected from reality.
That Cloverfield movie got an A- at the avclub (the onion), who are not afraid to pan a bad movie. It also rang up a 76% at rottentomatoes. Suppose that means it might actually be good. -jm
Named after the green guy in the garbage can Tue Jan 22 2008
The Oscar nominations are up. No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood both grabbed 8 nominations. Both are excellent. And it's now "Oscar-Nominated" Norbit. Thanks Derek.
All Bean: You know, to throw Tommy off his game, to psyche him out. Everyone knows her and Tom's son's name is John Edward Thomas, right? J.E.T. Moynahan. Few things make me happier than that kid having that name. Hey, I'm sure I've professed my hatred for Brady before, and I can't guarantee that it's not based somewhat (or mostly) in jealousy, but still...If you have testicles, and you're not a !@#$ Pats fan, you hate Tom Brady.
Interesting Statistics on Rambo Movies Fri Jan 25 2008
I could not have less desire to see this movie but John Mueller of Ohio State is a man possessed when it comes to the greatness of Rambo. This chart clearly lists out all of the pertinent information needed to understand the Rambo series.
From your Najesty: I haven't been to the site in a while so these could be reposts but i wanted to make sure Miolla saw them. You may need to turn the volume on low but you definitely want to hear the second one.
Sans music tracks. David Lee Roth is just insane. And by insane, I mean it's insane that he was ever a singer for a popular Rock band. This is stolen from Caldeira, and submitted by miolla.
For those of you thinking about children take a look at these great names of athletes. This is a friend of mine's website so look around at some of the other stuff as well if you want.
I think that Orlando Pace would be slightly better at jumping intermediate routes than Larry Allen. Fri Jan 25 2008
In honor of him making the probowl, here's a fictional letter to John Madden from the guy with the lowest rating in Madden '07. Somehow I missed this the first time around. Damn funny.
This is his fourth fine for dirty play this season; one of the other times was poking NYG's Brandon Jacobs in the eye Week 17. He mentions the potential of a suspension, but for anyone who believes a key component of NE's team would actually miss this next game, I refer you to the ad I saw in the paper today for the bridge which Bob Kraft and Roger Goodell co-own and are now selling.

I ______ a candidate's endorsements. Tue Jan 29 2008
In case you missed it, Ted and Caroline Kennedy endorsed Obama yesterday. I had a little trouble with the structure of this one, but meant to include any endorsement - union, celebrity, etc. -hendrix
I can't wait to meet this year's "Obnoxious Girl Who Cheers Way too Hard":
Moderately attractive but not actually hot, she'll be decked out in full regalia of whichever team the guy she wants to sleep with likes. She'll celebrate a relatively innocuous first quarter field goal like it's just clinched the win, and will instantly show a disturbing amount of concern if a player on her adopted team is slow getting up. It'll be clear that she was molested by her father during NFL games as a child, and should be pitied, not reviled.
Superbowls remembered through song Thu Jan 31 2008
The 80's were a special time in the NFL. Some amazing superbowls, some great teams and legendary players. None of that comes close to the legacy that is the 80's NFL Team raps. From miolla.
