The dyson push/pull game Be sure to hit the additional levels off to the left. I don't remember the block ones, but they are tricky. -hendred

How is this guy still alive? Tue Dec 1 2009

Dean Potter is the adventurer of the year. 3 minute base jumps in a wing suit put it over the top. I've seen pics of his highwire stuff, but the video is just unbelievable. Stolen from The Goat. -hendred

Avatar will be... Tue Dec 1 2009

New job posting... I hear it pays well Fri Dec 4 2009

From jacques: I came across this job opening on Monster. I thought maybe Ryan or Nino would be interested... both have solid recruiting potential in the north/mid-west, though Jackson's red coif my give him the edge.

Super excited to see Old Dogs Fri Dec 4 2009

This may be old news, but Rotten Tomatoes has celebrity averages. They're pretty entertaining. You can see how much John Travolta sucks , the work of the Stone Cutters, what what having a rats' nest of hair and biting your upper lip can do. -hendred

Audio file converter Tue Dec 8 2009

From Red Tom: Since Bryan's friends seem exceptionally geeky. And by that, I mean, the coolest around, perhaps you can help. I'm looking for a easy to use, free m4a -> mp3 file converter. By easy, something my wife could use without yelling across the house for me to come help her, interrupting my Top Gear viewing. She has a bunch of iTune songs she bought and wants to put them on a CD for backup and to play in the car.

It's down there on the left Wed Dec 9 2009

Monoprice.com If you need HDMI cables, speaker cable, stuff to mount a TV, or anything that falls under 'electronics' accessory, look there first. I'm convinced someone could open one of those stands in the mall reselling their stuff at 3x the price and make a killing.

THendred and I put his TV on the wall using a mounting bracket, hdmi cables, and some of these things and it looks super-sweet.

I've also heard amazon has cheap hdmi cables, so that's another option. -hendred

Buy stuff and help the economy Wed Dec 9 2009

You know all those other sites there on the left? There's an aggregator site called gearscan.com that handles them all.

Also, for snowboard gear, check out brociety.com. Same idea, but mostly snowboards and snowboard gear. Filed under Science, because buying cheap shit isn't an art. And to annoy mayes a little. -hendred

Percentage of sponsorship money will Tiger be down a year from now? Wed Dec 9 2009

I figure most golfers don't care how much strange he's picking up, but maybe his sponsors do.

Because everyone benefits from artificially inflated housing prices Wed Dec 9 2009

Mortgage bailout programs not working very well. The big breakdown seems to be in submitting documentation that the homeowners are eligible. But then there's this:

J.P. Morgan Chase told the committee that about 29 percent of borrowers it signed up for the program did not make their new, cheaper mortgage payments.

What. The. Frig. Thu Dec 10 2009

From Bean: House subcommittee votes on college football playoff.

Afghanistan? Check. Economy? Check. Healthcare? Check. College Football playoffs? Check. Congress discusses all the important shite. Could have been submitted as sports, news, or even craziness, but I chose politics, because I've never submitted a story as politics before, and frankly, I just wanted to see what a blue duck looked like. Also, I'd like to thank my sponsor SNL's Gossip Girl Staten Island skit for the title. If I've made a spelling or usage error, perhaps Jimmy Stats could come out of DTS retirement to correct me.

He may be old and senile, but he has a good nose for when your money is being wasted Thu Dec 10 2009

Maverick John McCain lists 100 stimulus projects of questionable value. I didn't read through all of them, and I'm not sure what the total cost of all of these are (the intro says "billions"), but some of them do seem kind of silly. -decker

Looking to spend too much on headphones? Thu Dec 10 2009

Look no further. On page 5, you will see a pair of headphones priced at $1,399.95 get a "Value Rating" of 10 out of 10. Although, if you go to pages 75 and 76 where they actually review it, you see that it gets a value rating of 8. Confusing. They also review the new Dr. Dre headphones and have some noise-cancelling and in-ear headphones. Also, if you need or want to replace the iPhone stock earbuds, Klipsch has a well-reviewed set with mic and volume control, although the volume remote control is apparently only compatible with the 3GS. -decker

A bit unexpected Tue Dec 15 2009

Apparently Avatar doesn't suck. It's at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment. This review seems to sum it up pretty well. Although Spider-Man 3 scored a 62% and we know how that turned out. -hendred

Oh, Cops. Wed Dec 16 2009

SFPD/Justice System doesn't bother to follow up on a hit and run. The hittee in this case was on a bike. The car's plate was photographed and there were several witnesses. Bonus story of cops complaining about cyclists and pedestrians. -hendred

Summary of Pittsburgh's proposed college tax. Via decked is a link to the NYT article, some analysis, and some comment highlights. -hendred

Quick add-on

This comment made me smirk:

The city lacks a compelling argument for treating universities differently from other non-profit institutions. How much revenue does the city forgo by not collecting real estate taxes from religious entities?

Good ole' fashioned arrogance wins the day Thu Dec 17 2009

Military drones' unencrypted video link intercepted by insurgents.

The potential drone vulnerability lies in an unencrypted downlink between the unmanned craft and ground control. The U.S. government has known about the flaw since the U.S. campaign in Bosnia in the 1990s, current and former officials said. But the Pentagon assumed local adversaries wouldn't know how to exploit it, the officials said.

Things I've learned from my patients. From ER docs. This is pretty old, and I thought it may be a repost, but I laughed, so here it is.

The Law of Inverse Value: the less you contribute to society, the greater the trauma you can sustain with minimal to no physical sequelae, including falls from 3 stories, stabbings (chest, neck, head, slashings to the face), gunshot wounds (chest, neck, pelvis, leg, traumatic arrest (only to be killed 7 years later in a separate GSW incident)), and high speed MVC's, unrestrained, where multiple people in the other vehicle are killed.

Facebook Revenge Mon Dec 28 2009

From jay frank blaise: You knew it was only a matter of time before this sort of thing made it online. It's amazing what the kids are into these days.

Brief Summary: Older sister tips off parents to stashed beer in brothers room. Brother rummages through sisters closet to find diary-esque writing entry. Brother posts to FB. Hilarity ensues.

I have seen the light... Mon Dec 28 2009

From ryan: I found this 3 or 4 weeks ago and thought I was behind in the times. But Tony K mentioned just finding it on Monday's PTI so I figured maybe I actually was ahead of the curve. Either way, this is an absolute must for anyone whose team isn't on or who is in a fantasy football league. Find it on whatever type of tv cable/dish system thing you have. If you don't have it, increase your package until you do. Trust me, you will thank me later...

Current Decade Rates as Worst in 50 Years Pew poll rates people's outlook on the decade. Interesting graph/chart one page down about various bits of technology/social trends. Obituary of Kim Peek, the inspiration for Rain Man I never realized how far-reaching his abilities were. -hendred

He knows all the area codes and ZIP codes in the U.S., together with the television stations serving those locales. He learns the maps in the front of phone books and can provide MapQuest-like travel directions within any major U.S. city or between any pair of them. He can identify hundreds of classical compositions, tell when and where each was composed and first performed, give the name of the composer and many biographical details, and even discuss the formal and tonal components of the music. Most intriguing of all, he appears to be developing a new skill in middle life. Whereas before he could merely talk about music, for the past two years he has been learning to play it.

Congratulations to the terrorists on their latest victory Tue Dec 29 2009

Schneier on security theater I've mentioned him several times, but he's here again anyway.

We should treat terrorists like common criminals and give them all the benefits of true and open justice -- not merely because it demonstrates our indomitability, but because it makes us all safer.

Once a society starts circumventing its own laws, the risks to its future stability are much greater than terrorism.

So there's a "new" root beer liquor on the scene, Root. It works well with rootbeer, cream soda, gingerale, straight, etc. Worth checking out.
